Another hobby that has always gone hand in hand with Urbex.

Anyone else participate?

If you want to learn more: www.geocaching.com

The reason I am posting this in the UE forum is because, Geocaching is urban exploration. A lot of the places you explore probably have geocaches inside them! You'd never even know it! So many places; parks, buildings, abandonments, forests, even your neighborhood.

This is a great way if you want to explore your city or others, be introduced to places you had no idea existed, or even discover more about places you know.

I'll break it down for those you aren't interested in clicking the link. Basically a "cache" in terms of geocaching is a hidden item, usually containing a log-book to sign, or prizes for trade. These caches have coordinates of its exact location and a description of the cache and the surrounding area. You enter the coordinates in a GPS and find it, there you have it! GEOCACHING!

My GPS is meant for navigating streets by vehicle and is not very useful for Geocaching. That didn't stop me from guessing where a Geocache was, based on the description of its whereabouts. I didn't even require a GPS.

The contents were all out of the container and soaking in 6 inches of water. The logbook was useless.

The handheld GPS's are better suited for Geocaching because you just need to follow the arrow. The one I have shows decimal co-ordinates but still makes it very difficult (if not impossible) to find the precise coordinates.

So the long and the short answer is yes I've participated but only twice. I would think that they are hidden all around the places that I explore, and perhaps I've come within standing a foot of one or two. I'm generally not interested in the hobby though, it's more popular with parents and their children.

I've incorporated an option into my Ontario abandoned places website to search these out, because Geocachers often have an interest in ghost towns and abandonments.

The idea is great, but I don't have GPS yet. I'm hoping to get a blackberry w/GPS on it. We do have a tom-tom but that belongs to my wife and she would beat me if anything happened to it.

Is in the link. Using a GPS unit you locate boxes or "caches" that have stuff in them. You may take something (I think), and you should leave something behind.

Yeah, that's part of the reason why I stopped, all about getting as many out there as possible, not quality of the hide. (There were a couple near my house that were pretty difficult but not that many.)

i've been a few times and enjoyed it. i know there are some caches with some interesting finds. i always enjoy finding the ones with the one-time use camera in them. never know what yer gonna find.

Looking on Geocaching.com or Waymarking.com have actually provided me with information on finding really amazing abandonments I would have never otherwise come across, such as this one, just out in the woods behind a bunch of offices:

Agreed. I've had a few that took me to rural abandonments/ruins I'd have never guessed were there in the first place.

Anyone else know of any sites that incorporate the two hobbies? I'd love to see a site where the co-ords sent you to a sweet explore rather than a cache.

I got only Around 100 finds, but I have designed a couple of caches myself, check them out if you're in the Greater Toronto area.

Planning on getting a GPS next month, at which time I want to start for sure. It's part of the justification of the GPS purchase to begin with. And the girlfriend wants to do it too!

Are there rules in this forum that prevent members from providing the co-ords for abandonments? In May I am going to Far Out West Texas (Terlingua) and plan to visit some cinnabar mines and other ghost towns not on the map and "mark" the locations with my Garmin Colorado 400T. As an avid cacher I believe that this would be a valuable tool for this community. Any thoughts?

Geocaching is lame, and most definitely not "exploring."

Check the Garmin GPS website, I have had geat success with the Garmin units.
https://buy.garmin...op/shop.do?cID=144 (non-mapping)or https://buy.garmin...op/shop.do?cID=145 (mapping units)

I normally do not "plug" anyone, but www.gpsdiscount.com is a great place to do business.

I tried it once or twice...it's wasn't my thing. Boxes were always full of little kid junk like stencils and smiley face erasers.

I don't own a GPS, I'd just cheat and throw the coords into google maps/earth. It gets you somewhat close to the area, and then from there you can track it down by using some logic or opening your eyes.

The problem with geocaching is, there's really no quality control. I've gone a few times with my brother, and sometimes it's pretty fun (creative hiding places and clues, fun swag), but a lot of the time, it's lame (boring locations, soggy or missing containers).

That being said, I've found a few geocaches by accident while exploring, and a lot of them deserve props for whoever set them up. Does geocaching = exploring? Not necessarily, but they are not mutually exclusive, and actually overlap nicely sometimes.
