| | | Belz Factory Outlet Mall (McKinney, TX) < on 2/24/2009 5:41 AM >
| | | So yesterday, February 22nd around 3PM, me and the lady were bored and she had never been to Belz, so I decided to take her and couple of her friends there during the day, I had never been in the light either. So we went, got there easy, not too many fallen trees/debris blocking the road that circles around it. I had noticed that a lot the boarded up doors and entrances had been ripped open (Damnit! It used to be fun trying to find a way in.) So we walked in, the place was in far worse shape then the last time I had been and this was only a couple months ago. We're exploring, making sure to hit all of the shops and back rooms, when suddenly we hear a roar, followed by another! We look at each other, "Shit! Cops!" We probably shouldn't have done this, but we ran and hid. (I know it is a stupid thing to do, I mean they are the cops... right?) Well after about a minute of hiding we come out and see two ATVs parked in front of the store we were in "Shapes". I was slightly confused, they were wearing all black and had patches on their arms and chest, and helmets. I asked "Are you the law?" They replied "Nope, just driving though, checking this place out!" Cool, so these guys were just off-roading inside of a mall, how many times in a life are you gonna see that? Anyways we parted ways and continued exploring, the place is still as cool as ever. If you haven't been here before, this is a MUST SEE. I love it, this was my third or fourth time there, never gets old. I decided to post pictures of the outside only, I don't want to spoil it for those who have not had the chance of exploring or another reason is because my Nikon D40X and all of my photography gear that was in a backpack was recently stolen. *sensitive topic* Hence forth, I must leave you with few picture from the iPhone. Also, on a side note, i'd like to add that the reason we hid was a couple months ago we did a group exploration of this place at night and were caught by the police, the asked us never to return, but I mean c'mon, never return to Belz?! Not even asbestos, fish hooks hanging at eye-level, crazy meth-heads, and the hungry-hungry homeless could keep me from Belz.

| | | Looks like a really cool place, even though these are just exteriors. I recently explored an outlet mall that's been abandoned for a good ten years, and I loved it there. It was pretty empty and devoid of any merchandise or artifacts, but it was still a really great location, like taking a trip back in time to the 80's with the wacky colored carpeting and the weird decor.

| | | reminds me of an old mall in kansas city, 3 stories with a macy's and a sears at either end, but everything in between is vacant. its all maintained and cleaned and lighted with fountains and everything but all the store fronts are from the late 80s.

Was it? I KNOW it was Mel's and I's. I know my 1st date w/ Barry was the Republic, and CN's was a couple buildings over by city hall whose name escapes me. Yours and mine...I'm having trouble with. So sorry. I guess it wasn't that memorable.

| | | I was up in that neck of the woods this weekend hunting for interesting things to take shots of - interestingly on the NW side - it looked like somebody had driven right through the chainlink fence and the entrance where it was boarded up. Didnt actually go inside, but got this shot from the entryway. Be careful in the parking lot - there are many potholes/sinkholes etc where the blacktop has collapsed.

I think that's my favorite sign in the place. I choose to read it as "Win-a-toria", indicating of course that it's full of win.

It was actually a threesome, I was there also... I really loved this place before it got trashed. I actually drove by there about two months ago to see if the fences were down so I could do a photo shoot inside. I didn't even get out of the car, just drove through the parking lot and as I was leaving an Allen Police officer in an unmarked Charger pulled me over. After the standard license and proof of insurance drill, he told me that they watch the location "very closely" and "if we catch you inside you will be charged with criminal trespassing." So... as with almost any other location, just be careful y'all.

| | | The year and the reason are one and the same: sometime in the late 1980's. At that time, the city limits of McKinney didn't even extend as far as US 75, Allen was a farm town, and Plano was... well Plano was already Plano, just not as much of it. SH 121 now bears no resemblance at all to SH 121 then -- it used to be a two-lane farm road, with several seedy "adult shops" along it, each with a handy fence you could park your car behind so your wife wouldn't see. (Remember, the '80s were BIP: Before Internet Porn) I moved to Dallas about the time the mall was built. Their billboards touted the fact that "A building this big would be illegal in Rhode Island". But I never went there while it was open -- it was too darn far away. Apparently, I wasn't the only one who felt that way. I drove past this weekend, and if the economy hadn't just gone down the toilet, I'm sure it would be on the short-list for the wrecking ball. There's still massive retail development just to the south, and an all-new intersection of US 75 and SH 121 is being built. Look for the parcel to be the first casualty of the rebound, whenever it happens. It's a perfect location for suburban shopping in 2009. Too bad for Belz that there weren't any suburbanites around 20 years earlier.
