| | Toronto Chinatown Abandoned Theater < on 2/21/2009 4:42 AM >
| | | Just throwing this out there and wondering if anyone has been to (or knowledge of location/history) the abandoned theater at Dundas and Spadina in Toronto? Its right on the ne corner but kinda hidden out of the way... I did not see any postings and it was quite interesting. Inside, could be seen the main theater and projection room. It is closed off at the lobby for storefronts... I was in a couple of yrs back and it seemed virtually untouched with the screen, projectors, sound system and even some old sholin monk movies on 35mm film. Projectors were the old cast iron carbon lamp type in seemingly excellent condition. Sorry for lack of pics tho, they were lost in a malfunction I had some time back...

| | | Agreed, and a clear violation of forum TOS rule #1. I don't know how some people can live with themselves.

| | | I've actually been in the theatre you are talking about. It's hidden very well. If anyone is looking for it check out the Dundas and Spadina intersection. As soon as you find it, it will become very visible. Or you check out a book called The Nabes. It's a book about the history of movie theatres in Toronto. That's how I found this one.

It starts with rule #1, and before you know it, people are flaunting rule #2. Soon enough: ANARCHY.

| | | I posted the same question two years ago... http://www.uer.ca/...urrpage=1&pp#post2
I was wondering myself whether the theatre itself is still there, since there were a couple renos of the place since it was closed.

| | | If you're talking about the old Victory Theatre it's LONG gone. It used to be above where the RBC is on the north east corner. I think they've since put offices up there.

| | | lol... I actually asked my parents about this one. They've been in it personally. Anyways, you're talking about the one right across "Pho 88" or something like that, right? If its that one, it was long closed. My parents said it was due to drops in profit or something. If it isn't that one, my bad.

I was in the Capital a couple of years ago after they turned it into an event space. The Sheraton was being used as a dinner theatre type of thing but I haven't seen any adverts for it in a while and the place does look unused whenever I walk by.

The Eaton Center one is now a Canadian tire and a Best Buy I used to be able to get into the basement Fire Escape Room 24/7 and actually camp there.. even when the theatre was open. The Sheraton center I used to sneak in and get into the Movies for Free.. It at one point being used for a clothing warehouse and has been since torn down and turned into more Convention/Meeting rooms for the Sheraton Center As for the rest I will have to check these out! Movie theatres rawk and are totally worthy of exploration!! What side of the road was the Capitol and the Hollywood on?

| | | I have not been down there at all for a long while in the old chinatown in Spadina and Dundas area. Becareful though, I do remember there are 2 one that is recently new more towards the end of Spinda, and the old one. The old one is located across the Dragon Centre. I dont know what is remaining there. All I know the last time I was down there was some kind of store or number of stores operating from the front of the lobby area. But I was told never to go to the washroom there as it was supposedly haunted. It could of been because I was very young at that time when I went to the movies there with my parents. But here is some info I dug up. "This theatre knew many incarnations. By 1935 demand for live Yiddish theatre had fallen off so the Standard became a movie theatre, the Strand. At the end of World War II it became burlesque house, the Victory, until 1975. It was a popular, and notorious hang-out for students and artists. Rick Salutin tells us “It used to be the Standard, a Yiddish theatre, and political cultural projects like “Eight Men Speak” went on its stage. In the mid 1930's. it became the Strand, a movie house. After the Second World War it was renamed, naturally, the Victory and became a burlesque house. When I was growing up it was a centrepiece of adolescence. Since we lacked any comparison, the strip shows seemed like the real thing. We didn't know how prissy they were in the Toronto way. G-strings and pasties were obligatory; numerous rules restrained the performances.” After renovations, the Golden Harvest Theatre opened as a Chinese language theatre. It then became the Mandarin Theatre and finally in a way, a mall. "
Moving forward there is another movie theatre there that has been closed down since 1999, but ironically the sign is still up. Its called the Far East Theatre which was supposed to replace the old Golden Harvest Theatre. [last edit 2/23/2009 4:24 PM by Honshu - edited 4 times]
