i've been a long time fan of exploring. just moved back here. haven't done it in years since i moved away to cornfield, il and most of the sites down there i only got to explore once before they were bull dozed away. i am always up for new finds so feel free to private message me. always up for new friends. anyway i am also writing because tomorrow i am pitching a story on urban exploration and the recession; how one is affecting the other...mainly your speculations. nothing about specific locations. members from other areas are welcome as secondary comments but i want to keep my piece local so chicago and surrounding area only please. illinois is ok. you would have to be comfortable with giving out your first name and allow me to record your voice during the interview. again private message me or send me an email. thanks

Huh, let's think about this.

  • The recession is affected by urban exploration?
  • Wacky grammar and syntax--are you a writer anywhere, for anything?
  • 'New finds' don't find you; you find them.

Skeptically and untrustingly,

Mr. Glass

*Why is your name iheartleica when you don't shoot with one? (As judged by tags on flickr and your picture of all your cameras.)

*Interested in exploring? I didn't see any photos up there... not even exteriors of possibly abandoned buildings, which are a dime a dozen.

*What kind of piece are you trying to pitch? OMG recession!=OMG more abandoned buildings!=OMG more exploring? I'm not sure that's something I'd want to draw attention to...

You can like Leica without shooting with one. I like the M series just fine, but I'm not about to pay the crazy money they cost.

You like-a Leica like-a I like-a Leica?

I wrote this post at 3:24 am, when I was nearly passing out at my desk. If I am not writing for a publication on a forum I can type however I want. No fact checking or editing is needed. Also when I was writing this it was a very rough draft and I apologise if it sounds sketchy. That in itself is my own fault. However I won’t apologise for the fact that my older photos of St Stephen’s aren’t in my flickr stream. For those that know, once your pro account on flickr expires, many photos disappear. But a quick search for the church my photo is visible. You can see it here.

http://flickr.com/.../tisaface/9440446/

It’s not much, in fact, the only indication this is St Stephen’s is through the tags. But this place does exist. For older members from Chicago or anyone privileged enough to go I am sure they remember it. Another search on flickr shows that people got in as late as 2008.

http://www.flickr....27s+chicago&m=text

My photo was taken in 2005. Unfortunately I no longer even have the negatives or prints as my ex boyfriend from Champaign stole them from my room after we broke up and took off. When I asked him about it, he said he knew how much I liked that place and wanted to get even so he destroyed them. I’m not going to get into the details about relationships but basically the guy was clingy and an idiot. I’m still sort of mad about losing my pictures, but the fact that people got in in 2008 maybe I’ll go back there over spring break. I do have photos from a loft I explored the same year and when I get home will gladly scan them in and upload somewhere for you to see. I am legit. How else would I get into this forum if not.

As for exploring places, right now it’s not my top priority as I need to finish my degree. I am taking 7 classes I really don’t have time for anything else right now. I haven’t seen my friends in months. I do keep a notebook and write down places in passing by that I intend to look at over spring break.

Again, I apologise for posting a rough sketch when I was dead tired. My proposed piece would be about how the recession is causing more and more businesses to shut down and I would like comments coming from those who may see this as an opportunity to explore and general feelings/emotions you may have about the fact that there are more. I don’t work for any publication right now, it’s for a class I am taking.

And lastly, while I love Leica, I can’t afford even the $400 ones being sold on ebay. I am taking 7 classes; some people can work while doing this, I cannot. Not everyone can. Although I do want a leicaflex or mp .085 eventually. Does this clear up things?

oh i should probably add that i had shot 2 rolls of film for st stephens. only 2 came out on one roll cos i was still new to photography. the other one was the one the ex stole and i hadn't had a chance to even scan those in before he stole them.

p.s.: as a brief feature i do think it's interesting. but overall the piece would just focus on the mere trend that more abandoned buildings are popping up.

Yes, I was wondering that, as well. As (I'm sure) were all the other people who couldn't form their thoughts as coherently as Diva did.

(Oh, PS? Personal attacks will result in temp-bans, for all the the people who've been trolling this thread.)

when you say what, do you really mean why? if so, why not? do you think my personal interest is showing too much for this even for a feature? probably the general public at first glance may not be interested, but for some people, this hobby is still unknown to many people. that in itself may be intriguing, but to peak interest further i may talk about a yearning for the past and i know for some explorers, myself included it's fun to look at the innards of a building, frozen in time with things scattered about that belonged to people. i think it's great to look over these things and try to guess what the people who worked or lived in said building were like. also the architecture, if there's anything of the style left is great to look at. this should also take care of the hazard of theft or destruction of the abandoned property for anyone new wanting to start exploring. a yearning for the past i think is something some people, especially those struggling financially or otherwise is something we can all as a public relate to. at the same time, the fact that there are more abandoned buildings due to more businesses shutting down can be a reminder for us all..especially obama and everyone working for him to help us. this will be a challenge but i want to attempt it. to have all this content and try to cram it into 45 seconds.

Want abandonments? Go to Gary.

also, i'll PM you a contact (assuming you're not a cop) that knows almost everything abandoned in Chi. While it's kind of my second home, I'm only there every six months or so. But if you can convince her you're legit, you should be good.

You at Columbia for school?

man this forum has changed a lot since 2005. also i really don't like the fact that you can read the forums without signing in. can't that be changed? my friend had a site up with me physically in the pictures at the church but the site is down. she said she has them on her hard drive and will be sending them to me soon. oh man i miss that place. which reminds me of the time of when i was in the philippines- i was literally hanging with villagers who lead me to an abandoned church. took pictures still haven't developed them. i need to get on that. i'll contact your friend soon. trust me i am no cop, there's no one i despise more than the chicago police bunch of drunk driving hypocrites whose sole purpose in life is to make you miserable unless you are friends with them then they sell you tasers like they did for one of my friends. i had another friend who got beat up by cops because their squad car cut her off while she was biking. again i ask, why are the forums public? it's not illegal to make them private; seen it done before.

Just an FYI, when you create a new thread, there is a check box that says "Make this thread Publically Viewable". Otherwise I believe it is hidden from the public.

No, I meant WHAT. What sort of medium? Is it a newspaper? City? Your high school's?

If the answer is in one of those huge blocks of unbroken text, I am not reading them to find it. Also, you can modify your posts instead of posting 4 times in a row.

how do i edit to consolidate? i don't see it. i'm not familar with this type of forum format.

no one's publishing this. the only people who would see it is my class mates, teacher, and whoever reads my personal, friends only blog. i wrote that up there. the medium would be for radio accompanied by some pictures of the exteriors of recently abandoned buildings.
