So I was looking through my photos and realized that it's been two and a half years (August 2006) since I actually visited this place, on Route 11 near Roanoke, VA. When I was a kid, I used to go swimming in the pool behind the motel, so I have to say it was pretty cool to stand in the middle of the empty pool with trees coming out of it. The property itself consisted of a two-story motel building, an owner's cottage (big, with floor to ceiling mirrors and filled with lots of weird toys and crap) attached to the check-in/office building (with desk and register), a large in-ground swimming pool (hidden and overtaken by trees) and two other small buildings (one was changing facilities for the pool and maintenance, I don't know what the other was for). Also thrown in are a couple of 'historical' postcards I found online.

A fun place, that's probably already in the location database. Nonetheless, I don't see too many posts from folks in southwest VA, so maybe some of you have been here before? For those of you who haven't, this story has a sad ending. When I was in the area around December 2008, I noticed that they were beginning demolition. God only knows to build what. This is my first location post, so whether you've seen it or not, I hope you enjoy.

Nice work. I think I remember this place. Was it in Salem? I grew up in Roanoke and then moved to Richmond, just as you have. I keep meaning to explore Roanoke when I am there. Hard to do when your visiting family.

Send me a message if you want to meet up and explore something.

Traveltown was actually in Cloverdale. Roanoke does have some cool places, nothing really spectacular, I guess, but interesting...
