Frostbite, Ice Tunnel and Odd Curiosity [Twin Cities]

My friend (Surixurient) and I have been attempting to retrace the steps of other explorers to some abandoned brewery caves. Pictures of our last three attempts are posted below. However, before discussing those trips, I feel must close the matter of the frostbite incident.

I mentioned this in passing last month and faced a chorus of "no pics, didn't happen." My credibility with anonymous people on the internet is of profound importance to me. Hopefully this resolves the matter.

I am afraid that my own frostbite was more severe. In fact, it froze my brain and caused my face to peel off and I turned into a zombie. It is my duty to inform the community that upon seen fellow explorers, I will feel compelled to scream BRAINS! and chase after you. Your weapons and internet-learned ninja skills mean nothing to me.

So, onto the drain. Our first attempt in January was unsuccessful -- the tunnel was fully blocked with ice. It was actually quite beautiful so we made a point of not destroying the ice so that others could experience it.

The next picture helps give a sense of scale to the tunnel and the ice.

A second attempt was aborted when we encountered too much running water. We returned a third time to find that the ice was sufficiently melted in order to carefully pass.

The drain is very beautiful with a variety of different construction techniques. The outfall is plain concrete but the tunnel quickly enters the sandstone bluffs and from that point onward there are are interesting erosions, etc. The older part of the tunnel consists of a brick base; the walls and ceiling are exposed sandstone.

The "end" of the drain is the standard type of chamber found all over the cities except with an interesting addition: a large, hand-made wooden ladder. This ladder is about 15 or 20 feet in length (I'm not good at estimating lengths) and allows access to an upper tunnel.

There was a lot of workmanship put into this ladder. In fact, I tested briefly and had my friend hold the ladder while I climbed up. Unfortunately the edge of the upper tunnel is sloped downward and I was too nervous to proceed.

First off, who claims this ladder? We were very impressed. Second, did you actually make it to the upper tunnel?

That first photo looks like trench foot not frostbite. I had the beginning stages of trench foot before due to my feet being wet and cold for a whole weekend. It looks like a very minor case also.

" Immersion foot, or trench foot, is a medical condition caused by prolonged exposure of the feet to damp, unsanitary and cold conditions. "

I guess the addition of that ladder picture is incentive enough for me to officially de-lurk. I can't really claim the ladder, but was present on a couple of the trips made to help construct it. (And yes - there was a lot of work put into it. I've never spent so much time in one drain in my life.)

The slope upwards at the top of the wall was the problem we were still attempting to deal with when I left the cities to return to school. We got a camera up there, and it looks that the tunnels splits in two directions. I don't know if there's been another attempt since. As you said, the tunnel was frozen closed for a while.

Averna lives, danger dies.

That's a lot higher-quality than a lot of Homer Simpson Ladders that have been constructed in the past. Bravo!

Whoever suggested trenchfoot: Nah. It is definately from overexposure to cold, but it is NOT frostbite.
Blister-y white-ish skin and nothing black and/or falling off: Frostnip ;) Difficult to find credible GOOGLE sources for, but easy to find in an EMT-B textbook.

By "Homer Simpson" do you mean "Slim Jim"? ;)

Naw. It's a term (I think I coined it, but it might have been Max) which we applied to the first ladder Jim made and which has stuck since (even on ladders not made by Jim). It's a somewhat oblique reference to an episode of The Simpsons where Homer tries to make a BBQ pit and fails miserably and goes on a huge tirade... "Why must everything in life be hard? Why must I fail at every attempt at masonry!?"

I must say, that the tunnel looks to be a great adventure

Anyone who made or helped construct that ladder is in well deserved hero status
Quite a good architecture for a tunnel build. ( the ladder that is, even thought the tunnel looks to be quite interesting as well )

I hope that if anyone ever does make it to the second level, pics will be provided

Great shots, and I must add my two cents here as well.
That's not frostbite, sorry.
Just some good ol' blisters caused by cold/wet skin in a damp pair of shoes for an extended period of time.

I believe what you have there is either Lupus, or Amyloidosis (lupus). Cool location nonetheless, although I find myself more jealous of your awesome 'stache in pic 4..

You know, I was editing some OSHA regulations at work, the other day, and came across instructions for constructing good "jacob's ladders," as they're called. Thought seriously about copying them for you guys. Then decided it was too much work and not as funny as the shitty ones. ;)

Also, I know all about said barbecue pit. I am a Simpsons connoisseur.

Sorry, I probably forgot my <sarcasm> tags.

Yep, it was frostnip. The story behind it is pretty silly. We were in downtown on New Years after midnight and discovered that the tips of her high heels had worn down to bare metal. It is apparently very difficult to walk on ice with metalic high heels. We walked a long way w/ only her nylons protecting her feet. They itched like crazy, changed colors, and then later began peeling as shown in the pictures. The pictures are about 3-4 weeks after the incident.

That is Sir Richard Burton. He should be nominated as Patron Saint of Infiltration. I'll put it this way: some people are giddy about wearing construction clothes and fooling passing drivers. He circumcised himself, mastered various languages and social customs, and then smuggled himself into Mecca.

I have a friend who works for St. Paul Public Works division and he said the connection from the Quarry to the caves has been filled in. You can still access them via the Gullible caves but the ingress point is in plain view and cops like to keep an eye on it.
