A legend of Virginia Beach...

There is an urban legend that has surfaced many times over my career as a student in various areas of Virginia Beach. The tale varies from place to place, and person to person, as most good ones do, exaggerated a little more each time. The story goes that at one point, far outside the old city limits, there was a strange religious cult that developed their own small, reclusive community. Although I've never met anyone who had actually been there, there are tales that they were waiting for God to come down from space to rescue them from the sinners of this world. Tales that they were free of not only sin, but clothing. There was a water park and playgrounds for the children, stables, churches, and apparently some of those mobile dwellings shaped like spaceships. Normal for a late 60's cult setting.

I've found the location of where all this took place, though it's very changed in the past 45 years, and was probably still in use until recently. Many of the buildings have been removed or razed, and much of what was there is now overgrown. My best friend and I explored a portion of this area on January 24th. From a cast iron and brick gate situated slightly off a main road, we walked a half mile back into the woods, until we came to an old rickety wooden bridge, which led over a small estuary of the nearby river. We approached two small, obviously man made lakes, and realized they were crystal clear. You can see all the way to the bottom, presumably from the chemicals once used in the water park. This placed used to be lined swimming pools, concrete, and screams from children having fun. Now, there is nothing but chairs strewn around in the woods, remains of an old wooden water slide, picnic tables covered with over growth. The water has receded into the two small pools. We didn't venture over the small hills behind here, and go into the woods. Instead, we walked across a field, back over the creek, and towards the main establishment. Here were the ruins of what could have been a church, warehouses, storage, and stables. I think a lot of the original buildings were long since demolished, and a good portion of this could have replaced them. The first thing I approached was a long storage trailer, which was slightly cracked open. Poking my head inside, I could see it was littered with various religious children's books, modest clothing (all the same.) There was recent graffiti, so I'm assuming the whole complex didn't shut down until somewhat recently. Exploring the old buildings, I discovered that some of it had been used for storage. A marble company had thrown some old sinks and counter tops in a couple of stalls. There were old speakers from Rock Church. The most recent date I saw on anything inside the buildings was 1997, and on one of the storage trailers the plates were dated to expire in 2002. All of these things that belonged to the people were now stuffed into these trailers, molding away. Feeling at ease about the place, we approached the main building from the rear, anxious to slip in a crack between the back door and some strange concrete divider pushed up against it. Thinking it was a little strange, I poked my head in. There was a trip wire, attached to a very sharp and intimidating saw, propped up to come down directly on your head if you tried to enter. Decided to go around to the front doors, instead. Two doors had been bolted shut, but the main door appeared to be accessible. Then I noticed a metal folding chair, made into a sign and placed over the window on the door. I hadn't seen this through the graffiti on my first approach. The sign said "WE ARE WAITING INSIDE THIS DOOR FOR YOU. BANK ON IT." Fuck it. I opened the door and instantly noticed it was nearly 30 degrees warmer inside. There was a couch, a calender dated Jan 09, and a running heater warming a pair of boots with what appeared to be fresh mud on them. All of the inside passageways were boarded over, except one hallway which went around a corner. Thinking there was probably somebody armed, and waiting, we decided to make a hasty exit back to our truck which was nearly a mile away.

Researching this location further, in city records, and on google earth, we noticed that the whole complex is actually more expansive than we noticed when we were there. It appears to extend almost another mile all the way out to the river. I plan on going back, armed, and with more friends. :]

Wow.... interesting location and great story. Sounds like the setup for an '80's horror movie. You are certainly braver than I am for wanting to go back..... ummmmm.... yeah, good luck with that.

My fave is the rusted out old crane. You should get that thing running again- it would be very useful for getting into second floor windows, and I don't think it would be very suspicious at ALL.

Nice work! However, I must advise you to NOT go back there. It is obviously still being used for something. Whether it is the actual owners or not really doesn't matter. Returning there is asking for serious trouble.

I have a lot of other interesting targets around the Eastern Shore and Southeastern Virginia that I will probably visit before giving this one a go again. When I do, don't worry, I spent years in the Army receiving plenty of combat training. So, If anything does go down, with authorities or a crazed crystal meth farmer, I feel that I will be prepared for it. My buddy has the same experience I do, and we've been able to deal with any problem so long as we were prepared. (Angry bums, violent teens, police, owners, etc.) However, this time we didn't have any of our gear, hence the quick stage right. For now on I carry all my exploring gear along with a first aid kit in my truck, at all times.

Good to know. No offense intended. You can't tell someones age or experience via a website.

Good call on the first aid kit as well.

Germs, Im from the Eastern Shore (salisbury area) and i've been dying to find a halfway decent site that isn't a old house, barn, or chicken house so if youre interested in having someone else to explore with over this way, let me know and we can work something out.

P.S. I'm always down for beating on drug manufacturers. (and stealing their shit) lol

Hey Kroc, I've actually been planning a trip to the eastern shore. We have some targets. Cape Charles, a couple of schools, some historic houses, and a prison further up somewhere in MD. I'm still currently doing the research, but it is in the works, so when it's going down, I'll be sure to let you know. I only have one more target before coming over there, which is a very large vehicle manufacturer that shut down recently, with active security. If you're interested in coming over South side and possible joining us for that, let me know.

Don't think I can do much over there, im on probation for 6 months for speeding so I dont know if any offense would fuck that up or if its just for traffic stuff. Trips for me are pretty impossible, for now at least, but hopefully that'll change. Then again if you wanna do something real industrial and active, I live close to a HUGE entirely active feedmill for one of the nation's top poultry companies. Might be a good opportunity to practice your ninja skills...

It seems like everyone I know from the Eastern Shore is in trouble with the law, has been on probation, or is in jail. Not much to do over there but cause trouble, eh? I've had a couple of speeding tickets there, actually. I'm not sure that I want to go to any stinky chicken processing plants. Unless it's abandoned and not so stinky

It's not always that stinky, it's a grain holding mill, aka a glorified collection of silos and grain elevators.

I was never that keen on it, but I've been entertaining the idea considering at this point I'll take what I can get over here. From what I hear, it'd be a pretty sweet spot to ue if it were abandoned. My grandfather once worked on a couple of the big silos for the power company. He said the biggest ones are big enough to turn a tractor trailer around in without backing up. But I don't blame you, it can smell every once in a while.

I'm interested in this location, too. I am not sure if I actually want to go there, but I'd love to know more about it. I've lived in HR my whole life and I've never heard about it. I keep trying to figure out where it is based on your description and Google maps, but so far I haven't found anything. Seriously, though, let me know if you ever want a couple more people to explore with.

I think it's usually safer in numbers, unless its covert with a lot of security. Then I prefer to be alone or maybe 1 other person. PM me or hit me up on AIM sometime.
