The Mysterious Mechanical Tunnels

So I had the opportunity one day to gain access to this area. There was very little notice of this opportunity, all I had on me was a one-cell flashlight and my Sony T1 camera. I suppose I am apologizing in advance for the pictures presented here.

What started out as a 22-degree Fahrenheit day turned quickly into a 90+ degree Fahrenheit underground tunnel network. I am in no way an experienced explorer, however I can say that what I did experience was akin to wonder and amazement.

The sound and temperature of steam piping, the rush of it around you. From the fast-flowing air in one tunnel, to the dank and stagnate feeling in your nostrils the next. The whirring call of electric motors powering ventilation fans. The regimented and disciplined ticking and purring of HVAC-related engines, powering various systems and sub-systems.

All these sounds and tactile experiences localized within the tunnels are providing services to someone, somewhere. Be it hot water from a faucet, electricity at an outlet, a heated office or sleeping quarters, or even home for a mouse or two.

At times I would sit in a darkened alcove and just listen.

Mechanical tunnels give the guest a unique understanding of the world above it -- what it takes to support mankind. The luxuries of the world above translate to heat, pops, clangs, whirs, and ticks, all surrounded in the lupine darkness. At times I would swear I heard footsteps, sometimes closer than what I would like. Yes I did find wet bootprints near the exit of the mechanical tunnels. No not an (un)welcomed guest like me, but a care giver to the electronic and mechanical employees busily provided civilized life to those above.

Sorry for the lengthy narrative above, but I like to capture my thoughts and experiences of places like this. I figured someone on the forum might appreciate the same.

Fantastic! I love steam tunnels.

Are these college tunnels? Or under a city? (I'm guessing college.)

I am amazed at your beautiful narrative. It takes me back to my first childhood experiences in tunnels. I can almost smell the dank air, and feel the heat let off from the pipes. I am leaving in 5 minutes to explore, unfortunately not any tunneling, but your wonderful thread has brought me to the brink of excitement and anxiousness. I hope to see more from you in the future.

Thank you everyone for the comments. I am glad I could share in not only the photos but the experience, too.
