Site suggestions for Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill?

I hope this is okay to ask here. I'm just starting out and a few of us are wanting to go out next weekend and do a little exploring/photography. We're not quite sure where to start though. Since most of us are new to this we were hoping to get suggestions from those who have gone out in the area. Something not too difficult.

Any other tips would be great too. Thanks!

Ack sorry this is in North Carolina. We wouldn't mind going anywhere in Wake county or surrounding counties.

I personally like exploring the less-traveled routes, like railroads, creeks, and freeways (through the woods just outside the fence)- I've found 3 or 4 locations in one morning before. If there's a huge chunk of woods, you've got a good chance of at least finding an old tobacco shed or something.

There are a few good spots in Raleigh, but most of Wake county has had so much development and yuppification in the past 20 years that they can be hard to find. Try looking in the outlying areas, where the cookie-cutter subdivisions haven't sprouted yet. I've seen some really interesting stuff out by holly springs along some of the secondary roads.

Durham has a lot more in the way of neglected neighborhoods and abandoned structures, and these days you aren't as liable to get shot there as you may have been back in the 90's. You can generally find plenty of boarded up warehouses and drugstores and the like just by driving around.

Chapel Hill is full of Hippies, as are its abandonments. Damn hippies!

In places forgotten, tread where you will. -=- http://www.flickr.com/photos/avius/

Do you guys drain? I am free Wednesday before 2. Better if you have waders, but deepest water is just 1.5 foot.

Avius- Thanks for the tips. I'm going to head out to Holly Springs tomorrow and do a little searching. Not too many places in Cary where I live. There's one large house that I'd love to check out but it has no trespassing signs and is way too close to the road for comfort. Hopefully I'll find something interesting in Holly Springs.

AnAppleSnail- I think draining is a bit in the future. I'm certain I'm not ready for that. Thanks for the offer though.

uLiveandYouBurn- sweet Jesus that photo made my hands sweat! If those are your feet you have a lot more guts than me. i'm too much of a girl to go way up there. Impressive photo though!

Honestly, I can say draining is way less minor/risky then abandon stuff. Rarely evil squatters and police... Anapplesnail is a VERY accomplished drainer and experienced in Raleigh drains. I would hook up with him and seep in the knowledge and gain a good friend. He can take you on minor smaller drains that do not have as much water. It could also help you establish more partners as well.

Ulive...Well yes he is nuts...but he is prob one of the best people to explore stuff with that has some form of difficulty involved or pressure. Climbing cranes is not everyone cup of tea, but he also does roof tops. Another excellent UE'er to learn TONS of useful tips from.

Since I do not live in NC right now I cannot assist you. However, you are way better off hooking up with fellow local explorers and learning from them. Once you gain their trust they will open more and more to you about locations.

Yeah I'd like to meet up with other explorers in the area and learn from them. There's a meet up group in the area I'm thinking of joining.

As for not being ready for draining. The photos are amazing of Anapplesnails. It does look like they have a great time and are interesting. I'm just a bit freaked out by being in tunnels underground. One day maybe but just one of my fears at the moment.
