'twas not as it seemed

So I drive by this place twice and figured I'd check it out.

overgrown yard, check

rotting hay, check

vehicles in back yard, check (there was actually 4)

tons of junk in the mudroom, check

So of course, it was occupied. Blind old man living in the basement. Talked for about 10 minutes then slinked out of there. Has this happened to anyone else?

oh shit.

I always wondered if that has happened to anyone.

What did he have to say to you?

Pretended to ask for permission to photograph his barn, blah, blah, blah. Small talk mostly; seemed sort of happy to have a visitor. Told me about someone who offered to mow his lawn but ripped him off. I was still freaked out a bit though.

oto and I checked out this place near Peterborough that looked as though a big chunk of the roof was missing, in a weird looking damage that suggested a meteor crashed through it (that's how it looked!). Of course, it was active and the owners were pissed we were showing interest.

IanK and I visited this run down P.O.S. house in York Region that was truly falling apart and looked... scummy. We went to investigate. Bang, the big, fierce dog comes running out at us.

One place near where I live was similar. Very run down and hygienically unclean looking. I wandered inside to hear voices coming from a bedroom, so I slinked outta there.

Definitely no "pride of ownership" in the above cases, LOL...

Wow. I would have gone in there too. It certainly looks abandoned. I've had a couple of close calls with inhabited houses that I thought were abandoned, but thankfully not this close.

Yep. I was almost at the window of this run down house, the usual signs ect. Then the owner showed up. Wondering what I was doing.

I said I need to use the washroom...

He was kind enough to let me use his washroom.

lol That must have been shocking for both of you! For sure I would have thought that place was totally abandoned. I feel bad for the old guy, and I feel like I should go mow his lawn or something, though that might take a really big machine.

heh...in the fall of last year i was exploring a farm near where i live, totally thinking it was abandoned...usual signs blah blah. as i step into the barn and start exploring i hear dogs barking and a quad come driving across the adjacent field from a newer farm. i duck inside this sort of stable room that was compeletly covered in huge cobwebs, which kinda creeped me out, but not enough to jump out and have farmer Bob freak on me. so i watched him from the dusty window look around a sec, then drive off.

That's nuts... The only thing I've ever run into was a raccoon or two. And police... I've found them waiting beside my car twice now =P

You should go back and talk to the old lonely guy, ask if he needs any help with any thing, I bet he would let you cruz all over and photo the hell out of that madass barn that is full of great shit.

You can see a million miles tonite, but you can't get very far.

Actually.... that's one of the better things that could happen to a Dodge Omni Better rusting roadside then on the road driving

Awww. I'd totally go back and mow the lawn if I had the tools... He's probably lonely. I'd hate to be blind, old and living alone in a place like that. It just seems dangerous. (Though, maybe the rest of the home inside was nice?)
