| | | 1920's School abandoned since 1989- Durham, NC < on 1/23/2009 6:37 PM >
| | | This school was built in the 1920's to replace an old, one-room schoolhouse from the 1800's. At its height, it had an elementary, middle, and high school on a sprawling campus. In the 70's, though, the city of Durham was approaching this corner of the county, and the school started its decline when the high school was shut down and consolidated with one in the city. A new middle school was built down the road, and in 1989, the elementary school was closed and the site was listed as "surplus property". It suffered the wears of time and local ne'er-do-wells for almost 20 years, until 2006, when all but the original historic building was demolished to make way for the eventual construction of a new library. The building you see here will eventually be renovated to be part of the library complex. These are pictures from two trips, three weeks apart. The first was a solo tour of the ground floor during the day. The second was a hasty night mission with a buddy- They finally started construction on the library, and we wanted to see the second floor before the new construction site got too lively.
These amazingly creepy dead oak trees have sadly now been bulldozed.
| Around back
| A couple of lonely desks in the hallway
| The old auditorium, with three grand balconies.
|
|
| This banner was no doubt hung with pride two decades ago.
| A few alumni have stopped by.
| The floors are a little rickety.
| I think the carpet tacks are the only thing holding up this hallway.
|
Note the cat. It was bolting through the darkness. I just about soiled myself.
| Where's the mystery meat?
| Oh, never mind. I found it.
| A mysterious pair of shoes.
| |
I took a lot more shots, but these are the most interesting, amusing, and/or artistic ones. Enjoy!

The school (the remaining building, anyway) has the two-story auditorium, four classrooms and some offices on the ground floor, with more classrooms and the theater balconies upstairs. There is a one story cafeteria off to the side. We didn't see all of upstairs because the floor was too shoddy in spots, and after going through a few times downstairs, we didn't want to risk it.

| | | Good school! Reminds me of a favorite near Charlotte that was stripped by the county of all sellable things. Yours appears to be in better shape; it's at least boarded up...

| | | Never thought this one was big enough to have an auditorium, that's a surprise.
I become capability. I become the horror. What we know we can become only in our heart of darkness. It's my gift. It's my curse. |

| | | Quite the surprise, indeed; the whole place was, really. It has a lot of really interesting detail, and is definitely worth a trip if you're in the area. Easy access at night or on weekends, despite the active construction site on the front porch.

Your wish is my command. Forgive the hand-stitched quality of this panorama. I will get a better camera some day!
Here are a few other interesting bits. There were a few different styles of seats: Most were boring gray metal and orange wood- looked like they were from the 60's or 70's. But up on the balcony, there were some that looked like they were from the 1940's, and some (probably original) from the 20's. We also found some neat stuff in a few lockers that I don't think had been opened since the school closed.

For a minute, I thought you were talking about stopping by to see the cat! I was all like, "sorry, but I think it's scampered for good!" But for sure, the school is a great spot; let me know if you need info or anything on it. It should be open for exploration for at least another couple of months. Also, @Kenso: Glad you enjoyed it! No post would be complete without a shot of a broken toilet-- it is truly one of the universal icons of UE.
