Question about respirators and gasmasks
< on 1/21/2009 6:30 PM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

Hello,

I've read many things now about various reasons to wear a respirator during exploring. I own a gas mask, but I'm wondering whether it has the same filtering function as a P100 respirator. My gasmask is an ABC mask (from the British Army), does it protect me against all the hazards (which you come across as an explorer) or do I have to buy a P100 respirator?

I don't know about your mask specifically, but if the filter on it (it has removable filters on it, right?) is old, I would not use it at all. Not the answer you're looking for, but you'd have to somehow research the filter the mask uses to find out.

I'm guess it probably doesn't. I'm no expert, but I would think that the filtration and decontamination of gases works much differently than asbestos which is a particle.

Even if your filter really does do that, how old is it? Filters have limited life spans once opened and even if it once did work for what you need, it may no longer do that if it's been sitting around too long.

I would spend my time on researching new filters that do exactly what you need them to do and ensuring that they'll fit on your mask.

Hope this helps.

I could be wrong in all this, but I'm pretty sure that gases and all that are filtered through active charcoal, while asbestos and the like are put through an actual filter.
Your mask would not have the right filter to keep out the friable asbestos.
Of course, if it was made to filter particles and not gases you should still at least get a new P100 filter.

The P100 will protect you against particles (dust, mold, asbestos, small grazing mammals), and these particulate filters generally last until you notice they're hard to breathe through (Check for your brand! I'm not the one who'll get lung cancer!). For anything like gases, you'll generally get some kind of filter with chemicals in it to react with harmful things and keep them out of your lungs. These pretty much always have some short shelf life, depending on the cartridge. I suggest storing them in a sealed ziploc when you're not using them, but my favorite thing to do is to try and avoid chemicals...

It's my understanding that simple p100's don't just last forever until they just get plugged up and are hard to breath through. I'm just ballparking here, but it's something like 100 hours of usage that they're normally rated for.

P100s are good for general dust, mold, asbestos. Adequate for 99% of UEing.

No gas mask gives you protection against CO2 and asphyxiation though. Something to think about if you're going to explore sanitary drains, or other places where decomposition uses up oxygen/increases CO2 level.

Who explores sanitary sewers and why? Aren't those just a bit...unsanitary, to put it nicely, or in other words a s**thole?

Why not explore a sewer? The only problems are occasionally having a shortage of breathing air, and accidentally getting poo in your eyes/mouth/nose area. Pure-sewage conduits are more likely to have bad air, but I hear that CSO ones just stink mostly. Really it's mostly mixed-overflow things that have poo and are explored. I hear that the sewers can be quite amazing, anyway. "I hear" because I myself come from an area where the sewers are tiny, we just have drains.

maybe we can post a sticky somewhere a list of equipment youll never need as an urban explorer, ill start:
gasmask
ninja climbing spikes
tactical shotgun
thermo-nuclear warheads

seriously though--then we could avoid threads like this where the questions are simple (and not terrible questions to ask if you dont know any better) but have been answered elsewhere

just a thought.

OMG I KNOW WHAT WE SHOULD DO.

We should make a newb forum so that newbs can feel comfortable asking questions to avoid getting cancer.

We could call it "Forum De Rookies" or something.

just a thought.

I really don't think you have to worry about getting cancer with the little amount of exposure you have with asbestos from exploring. Unless you are kicking piles of it up in to the air and playing a game to see who can inhale the most i wouldn't worry about it.

You are better safe than sorry. I use discretion and wear the mask when I think I might be at risk.

There was no need for a sarcastic reply--my reply was meant only to be slightly humorous but finished in what i thought to be a reasonable, respectful tone--the suggestion to pin common, useful information doesnt seem to be insulting, and it would allow questions that dont get asked as frequently to be more visible in the forum itself...

I guess that's the difference, the storm and sanitary sewers in my city aren't combined, and the sanitaries seem to be smaller pipes, not caverns like London's.
