Exploring a TankerShip part 2 *pictures included*

So firstly id like to apologize because the pictures in this set did not turn out very well. because of conditions that i will explain soon i was unable to use my flash in most pictures, or really explore as much as i wanted to.
This was also posted in my local ontario forum as well but i felt id post it here as well to allow every one else to see it as well

So last night my intrepid adventurer companion and my self *he is yet to make an account but when he does i will introduce him at a later date* Set out to a bustling port near our location to explore 2 ships which have been put in the harbor for the winter for repairs and retrofitting. After a short drive to the location with lights and camera in hand we discovered that the first of the 2 ships even at 10pm at night still had lots of activity going on on board, and on the main deck so we were forced to revert to our other and better choice. The ships name is the agawa canyon for any of you boat nuts, and she is a large laker ship designed from what we could see to hall grain or food goods, As you can make out in the pictures at the bow of the ship there is the bridge and tower, just behind that there is a large 6 story high tower, from which the unloading conveyor belt system swings out *its giant* then you have the main deck of the ship which unfortunatly at night has lighting every 20 feet and at the stern of the ship appears to be the living quarters, which were fully lite.

After doing a slow drive by, and then parking our car in a non discript nearby underground parking garage, we made the walk out to the pier, Standing around by some darkened grain towers for a wile to make sure there was still no movement. Then summoning up our curige we made the walk across a large open staging ground to the gangplank and up onto the ship, only then realizing how actually lite the main deck is, every 20 feet there is a light and absolutely no cover. So thinking to our selves if we cant be as sneaky as we wanted to, might as well be blatantly obvious that were tourists. We set out towards the bow of the ship with the giant tower. At a brisk pace we quickly passed the length of the deck. And stopping suddenly noticing that the lower level to the bridge tower had a few doors that were open, with the lights on inside. and nearby a hatch to the underbelly with lights on. We listened intensely, and not hearing any thing after a moment or two. quickly making up our minds we ascended up the stairs to the tower its self, realizing that there was just 4 levels of the tower, and only a ladder to climb each level, made haist to the top of it. Gaining possibly one of the nicest views iv ever seen of a night time vista. We had full view of the rest of the ship, and a really cool tower to explore. Inside it is where i took the pictures that iw ill post below, There were these 2 giant wheels to shuffle the grain from down below up top and down on the conveyor as well at the back of this space there was a really cool set of stairs and platform systems that just descended off in to the darkness below.

Realizing that a ship could be a difficult place to explore especially with crew on board we decided to back track out again, and head up in to the bridge its self. Climbing the outside stairs we quickly traveled up 3 levels to the control level, and looking inside we could easily see all the navigational aids and even the captains chair, Looking much like some thing james t kirk would sit in on the bridge of a star ship. Realizing the door its self was unlocked we decided it may be against our better judgment to explore inside the bridge, do to that would be very hard to explain if ever cought. We decided to continue on down in to the hold and underbelly its self. On our way down we stoped for a moment to look at the living quarters again. This time we noticed alot of movement, Lights turning on and off, heads bobing around and the possibility of some one putting on a coat. Having an idea that they might be about to head out on the deck and do some rounds, we decided that the rest of our exploration will have to wait for another day. We made our way back to the gangplank and back down to the pier, disappearing off in to the lamp light of the silo.

Shaking our fist as we drove away. We will have to make another foray in to the world of shipping again, possibly some times towards more of a 3am time, so as not to worry about patrols.

Again sorry for the poor pictures. Im still trying to figure out how to take good pictures at night, and i think i may need a tripod. Hope you guys enjoy

More infiltration than exploration but very cool nonetheless. You may try hardhats and type V life jacket vests the next time as "disguise" though it would only be effective against shore patrols unfamiliar with the people working onboard. Were any engines running on the ship? Sometimes they can vibrate the deck and make tripods worse than useless. There are plans online for "poor man's steadicam" that you can build yourself out of dumbbell weights and hardware store parts for under twenty bucks.

Nahh the engines were not running, Just a bilge pump down in the hold some where. I ended up going out and buying a tripod today so the next trip i think is going to be abit better. I really wanna get to the top of that tower and take a 360% picture and load it in to one of those programs to allow you guys to see what we can see from the top. could be very cool.

Great story, sucks that your a'venture got cut so short, how dare those people... be on their ship! The pics are great considering the fact that you couldn't really use your flash out in the open. I really look forward to hearing bout your next incursion!

I love to read stories like this, good job. Especially since you weren't the only ones on it, I'm really impressed.

And yeah, a tripod makes night shots much much easier. My advise would be to play with it / try it out some night before you are on the ship again though, just to get comfortable with it.

Did you write down the ship's name or IMO number? It would be interesting to dig up some technical details etc.

Great job, anyway!

I really enjoy having a story to go with the pictures. I did a little digging an found a web site for the M/V Agawa Canyon.

http://www.boatner...et/agawacanyon.htm

There is her history and several pictures of her on this site. Wish I could have been there, I love old ships as much as I do old buildings.

The page link I put in my other post has some of the technical information in it. Such things as her size, duties, and history (ownership and accidents).
