WWII Coastal Battery ¹33, Panagia Cape, Black Sea.

Soviet coastal gun battery ¹33 was situated at Panagia cape, Black Sea. Firepower was presented by three 203-mm/50 long range guns and several mortars. This battery played an important role on the southern front - during the nazis invasion to Crimea in keeping the enemy ships out of the Kerch strait and stopping any attempts of landings.

The battery consists of observation post bunker, several pillboxes with machinegun nests, miscelannous facilities as filter-ventilation control rooms, fuel storages (still with diesel fuel inside!), ammunition storages and even something like an underground barracks. All these are communicated with long underground fortified gallerys (partly collapsed by now). The positioning of machinegun nests (as I believe - there were the heavy goruynov or what more possible - degtyarev machineguns) left almost no chance to enemy troops if they ever dared to land inside and storm the fortification.

Also there is gun battery 746 "Komintern" was situated nearby, but there`s just a monument to the battery, no pillboxes or gun positions remained by the present day.

If you have the opportunity to visit other coastal batteries you will see similarities. Corregidor, Philippines (the best preserved). Ft Monroe, Virginia, US. North side of Golden Gate bridge, San Francisco, California. Ft MacArthur, San Pedro, California. North and south side of Diamond Head, Oahu, Hawaii. Did you know there are remnants of a Russian coastal fort on Kauai?

1. South side of Diamond Head.

2. Ft MacArthur gun ring.

3. North side of Diamond Head. This site was used in Hawaii Five-O and Lost.

4.

5.

6. Ft MacArthur mortar battery.

7. Ft MacArthur mortar battery.

8. Corregidor mortar.

9. Corregidor mortar.

Urban_PsycoSis, it is very likely that 12.7 DSHK Heavy Machine Guns would have been mounted there as well.
