a dear online friend told me about this place a few months back and i just managed to stop by the other day with a friend, and after lugging through all the snow i have to say it was worth the excercise to get in! this place is beautiful on the inside (even though my pic's don't capture it very well xD). If you live in cambridge or surrounding area its definitely worthwhile if you haven't seen it before

nice set man. I really like the room with the caved in roof...the streaming light and blowing snow must have been quite the sight.
any idea what this place was once used for?

Awesome set, place looks to be in a beautiful state of decay. I love how the roof collapsed and let some snow and light in, could be thought of as a sky light!

I like the staircase for some reason, even though it's not fancy or anything. I haven't a clue what that building was used for, it seems so generic...are you going to tell us?

Excellent find Vapula! I have never found much info about Joy and this article you found says it all. It also closed in 1985 and there was a large fire in 2005, which destroyed much of the building. The location is in the LDB.

Canadian Register - Joy Manufacturing Company (Canada) Ltd.

This essay was written in c 1959. It was copied from the Canadian Register of Commerce & Industry held in the Western Libraries at the University of Western Ontario. The original article should be consulted since this copy may contain some errors. The text and/or the images are being made available to researchers for scholarly purposes. They should not be used for commercial gain without the permission of the author or publisher.

This wholly owned Subsidiary of the Joy Manufacturing Company of Pittsburg, U.S.A. has been doing business in Canada since 1920, the year in which the Sullivan Machinery Company opened a sales office for its Claremont and Michigan city product in 1910 a small manufacturing unit began the assembly of portable compressors from parts produced in other Canadian shops. Hoists, diamond-drills and oil furnaces were added in 1934 when the plant was moved to Dundas, Ont. Plans for further expansion had to wait through the war years but in 1947 Joy Manufacturing Company and the Sullivan Machinery Company merged their Canadian organizations, which then became the Joy-Sullivan (Canada) Limited and, subsequently, the Joy Manufacturing Company (Canada) Limited, the company under review. The next important development was the purchase of a big machine and tool plant at Galt, Ont., and so began the development of the present well planned manufacturing operation.

The Galt plant, standing in a handsomely landscaped plot with, on one side the beautiful Soper Municipal Park, and in front a number of attractive homes and gardens, proves that industry can function in such company without detracting in any way from the value of the property or the beauty of the prospect.

Products--These include: rock drills, rotary and percussion; tungsten carbide and steel integral rods and bits; utility and scraping hoists; portable and semi-portable compressors; stationary compressors up to 1,000 h.p.; a very wide range of electrical connector products from airport runway lighting assemblies to heavy power distribution components for underground mining: fans for mining and industrial applications; conveyors and conveyor structures; mine loading machines; trackless mining equipment; and major accessory products used in the mining and construction industries. These are sold to practically every big mining company in Canada and to many industries and contractors.

The Joy Organization--This is Canada wide, with a smaller manufacturing unit at North Bay, a service depot and warehouse at Blind River and branches at Vancouver, B.C.; Calgary, Alberta; Winnipeg, Manitoba; Elliot Lake, Sudbury, Kirkland Lake and Toronto, Ontario; Montreal, Quebec; Fredericton, N.B.; Sydney, N.S.; St. John's and Grand Falls, Newfoundland.

The Joy Company also operates a contract drilling division from Galt. Although Joy (Canada) is practically autonomous at Galt it should be kept in mind that the parent operation is world-wide, and that the CanaChan client can therefore draw on a wealth of experience.

Sales--The company sees to it that its sales representatives are thoroughly trained in the applications of its products even to the extent of being able to undertake emergency repairs in the field, an excellent sales approach by any standard.

Administration--David W. M. Ross is the vice-President and general manager, the chief executive of the company in Canada.

Address--Galt, Ontario.
