| | Urban Camping in Vancouver < on 1/20/2009 8:17 AM >
| | | Hello everyone I am currently writing a book about urban camping in Vancouver. Essentially it is a comment on the state of living in a large metropolitan area. Myself and a collaborative partner are not only writing the book, but doing the photography and graphic design as well. I can think of no better place to post for advice and guidance than on this site. What I'm looking for is access to places around Vancouver, such as skytrain tunnels, rooftops, old buildings, industrial spaces, etc. Anywhere someone might want to set up a camp. Be it a homeless person or someone like you and I; an outdoor enthusiast/Urban Explorer. If anyone has ideas let me know. your friend Asociumstance [last edit 1/20/2009 8:40 AM by asociumstance - edited 1 times]

| | | Handouts are tough to get around these parts. Good luck!
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too! |

| | | Might I add that if there's anywhere easy to access in Vancouver that's dry or warm enough to sleep in, it's likely to be occupied. If not, someone with a badge might kick you awake halfway through the night, throw your shit into a trashbag, give you a ticket, and tell you to move along. That said, there are homeless camps and squats everywhere you look- underpasses, doorways, fields, any type of grey zone. Hell, even right on the sidewalk. Best of luck with the book, though.

| | | Good luck with the book, man. Two places that you could find as good resources, if you haven't checked out already: Spartacus Books in Vancouver, and Camas Bookshop in Victoria (corner of Kings and Quadra; they also have a big website). There's lots of useful books, not to mention the friendly folks who frequent/run these bookshops.....a lot of them are punks, anarchists, who-knows-who, bohemians, activists, artists, homeless....many of whom have been around north america and the world, and have done lots of 'urban camping'. They might just have the info you're looking for. On the Internet, IndyMedia's Vancouver branch may possibly have some stuff, too. Good luck!

| | | Thanks NinjaKlutz, we had our first 2 day camping trip and have planned another coming up soon. Unfortunately, just moving to Vancouver from Victoria, I have yet to find anything remotely as interesting here as back home. I'm sure time and research will reveal some exciting history about this city. Good luck with your exploration of Victoria! I would love to hear anything new you discover in the future!

| | | i've squatted in sfu for about a month. If you think you can pass yourself off as a student that's a decent place to crash for a few nights. There're always a few empty lockers to put your stuff in, just bring your own lock. Also there's showers and such, even washing machines, if you care about personal hygene. I can't imagine myself getting night's sleep on a rooftop as there's the constant anxiety of the maintainence man coming in or security or whatnot. There are also a few decent parks if the weather's not miserable as it is now. Also try the airport, etc. You have to get creative really, look beyond the usual homeless squats, of which now are few and far between. [last edit 1/30/2009 7:29 PM by dogyeaars - edited 2 times]

| | | i've been a urban camper on and off in vancouver for about ten years now. i spent had no problems staying at UBC. it has showers at the pool and even internet at the SUB building. forested parks are ideal but i have also pitched my tent on the roof of buildings only one storey high because you can usually use the dumpster to gain access to the roof.(corner stores are great for this). i have also used the landscaped gardens of taller apartment buildings in the west end. you gain access over a fence and there is usually plenty of trees and wont be bothered at all if you leave before the sun comes up.as with anything else do your homework, walk around and find the best and safest spot you can. stay safe and happy camping!

I may suspect that now thats not such a good idea, staying in the forested areas around UBC.
