| | | | Exploration log < on 1/18/2009 8:04 PM >
| | | I have recently started keeping a log of all the places that I explore. I started doing it because I felt that I wasn't giving myself enough credit for having been to as many locations, and on as many adventures as I have, and also just because I wanted to have some type of permanent record of my adventures. And also maybe because I had a little too much spare time between explorations. But this has proved to be entirely worth every minute that it took to make. It's almost like a portfolio that I can show to people who are curious about what I do, or what urban exploration is. It's also been interesting to see some of the trends that have appeared when I put this data together in such a way that it can be visualized. When the "UE accident statistics" thread came up, I had an exact number of locations that I've visited thanks to this log. Heres my log: http://www.DJTricities.com/locations.htm I've fubared (censored) some stuff that would give away certain locations. This fubared version isn't the one I normally use; I just made it for this post. I've become pretty neurotic and OCD about keeping this thing organized. "NZ" in the state column means New Zealand. The complete column tells whether I'm planning on doing more future trips to the location. In the pics column, a "P" means I, or someone is my group, went with an SLR and a tripod and done some artistic photography there. A "D" just means I have some pictures of some sort to document the adventure; ie. point-and-shoot, built-in flash photography. And the columns with the names show who has been there and who hasn't, among my main local UE friends. The name with the "XX" is the person who discovered the location (or at least did the social engineering that led us to find it). So does anyone else do anything this weird and neurotic? I just wanted to see if other explorers do stuff like this. If not, I highly recommend it! [last edit 1/18/2009 8:04 PM by DJ Craig - edited 1 times]

| | | I don't really track it too much, but with my photos I always log date and camera used. I only keep a list of places that I need to do or recon. Before I started that list I was amazed at places I wanted to do, but would forget about.

I do actually have a separate to-do list as well. It's much shorter and simpler. But yes, I found the exact same thing with that.

| | | i haven't kept a log, but that's actually a really great idea, and i think i might start... just sitting here, thinking of the places i've been to, i've done more exploring than i realized (partially because i don't have pictures of most of them, as they were from before i got my new camera *shakes fist at crappy kodak point-and-shoot and its inability to take pictures that are worth two shits at night).

| | | I used to log all of the places i went to, but im going to so many places now that i either forget or just dont really care. And most of them are not well known so no reason to log it for other people that i know really know to go and destroy. If i want to tell somebody about it, i'll just bring them there.

| | | I have a low-res searchable dump for most of my exploring photos going back to 2002. I find it useful for looking up when and where, ie where was I 2 years ago today? I wouldn't find much use for a log like you've presented or the time to maintain it. Personally I find written, descriptive diary/narrative style accounts of events and explores more interesting. | | | A few months ago I started counting in my head how many locations I'd been to... I thought "maybe as much as 50"... Then I started searching trough photos, and writing it all in a spreadsheet like you. I came out to 152 location visits (which is about 130-140 distinct locations)! Anyway, I'd recommend it for everyone having seen more than a couple of locations. Tijmen

Before I made this, my own estimate was about...15-25 locations, perhaps? Turns out I was at about 45. Just hit 70 trips to 50 locations last night! [last edit 1/19/2009 7:13 PM by DJ Craig - edited 1 times]

| | | I think keeping a log is a great idea. It would be great if there were a log on this site which you could add places you have been and places you want to go. This would encourage people to enter every site into the UE Database. Maybe this feature already exists - I am a new member. I have recently moved, so discovering new places will be a project this summer.

| | | Keeping a log is definitely a great idea. I've been keeping one since the new year, and it's so much fun to look back and see what you did before, or see what an experience was like the first time around, stuff like that. I try to write it in the narrative style so it's more interesting to look back on than say, a list. The only problem is it takes some effort to write so I normally update it a few days after the exploration.

You will quickly discover that many members choose not to add their locations to the database. No amount of encouragement will change that. Also, welcome.

| | | I have a freakishly good memory for dates that allows me to remember what, where and when I explored without needing to write it down for the past 4 or 5 years or so. People who know me can probably attest that they can throw out a "when did we go to this place?" and I can usually get the exact date.
