Water-powered wood mill

This is getting to be a habit... I had permission to shoot in this mill. Actually the owner approached some photographer friends and myself to document this place before he started renovations - based on what he had seen of our photography of abandonments. Mamma will be so proud of her UER'er.
The mill is over a century old. The dam and pond are on one side of the main street in town, the mill is behind some buildings on the other side. Water travels in a large pipe under the main street and the stores on that street to power the mill. It operated (sporadically) until about ten years ago. Now it is used as an overflow storage area for the hardware store in town. But all the machinery and tools are still in place. Here are some outside views:

Cash is king! Moving into the basement, I found all the belts and pulleys that transmit power from the water turbine to the machines in the building. Felt a bit like a dungeon.

I tried to get a shot down into the turbine-pit, but you can't see too much in it:

They used to make windows here. Not the glass, but all the fancy trim and structural wooden bits that hold the glass and make up a sash window. Moving up to the ground floor, I saw some of the tools and heavy lathes/routers/planers that prepared the wood. Everything was under an inch of dust. The old machinery was beautiful... made in an era when "functional" could also be ornate. Very steam-punk.

The second floor had more machinery in it. Seemed to be mostly for making dove-tail joints. The second floor also featured the only heated room in the place - a smaller workshop that had a wood stove. Appreciated this after a few hours here. Had to keep an eye open for holes in the floor where the belts come through.

One more floor to go. To the attic! Through this cool sideways-opening trap door at the top of the stairs... I find Alice-In-Wonderland. This is the kind of attic every kid dreams of playing in.

nice!

They say "you can't judge a book by its cover!" I say "YES you can, if the cover has a girl on it with a cock in her mouth, its PORN!" if she's 18 and the cock is black, its GREAT porn!

This is a nice set and write up! Seems like you got some nice luck with getting approached to take these pictures with permission. Keep up the good work champ.

Thanks! I like the drama that I can get when I use ambient light (usually means tripod)... sorta like the old film-noire look.
