Some really basic UEX questions
< on 1/15/2009 8:37 PM >

Howdy all, I'm very new to urban exploration, but I've always had an interest in old buildings.

One of my main questions is actually gaining access to buildings. What if a building is locked or boarded up? Is is safe to say that if there are those type of security measures its just not worth going into?

Also, I live in a urban area, which is why I asked the previous question. Also, how do you try to avoid suspicion? I thought of buying a hardhat a safety vest, and maybe getting a toolbox to put all of my camera equipment into. Is that dumb or taking things too far?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Howdy. It depends on a risk vs. reward thing. Obviously breaking and entering isn't recommended, but I'm not saying some people don't do it either.

Not dumb at all and for some more extreme sites or infiltration of active sites it might be applicable wearing a 'disguise' - though more rare. Usually the most common and easiest way is to just act like you own the place.

Hope this helps.

1) There's a saying in this hobby: "There's always a way in." Of course, the idea is to find that unlikely, impossible entrance point and go in without leaving a trace. Most interesting places have some kind of secured perimeter--a door with a padlock or all ground floor windows covered with boards. All that means is that it's going to be a little challenge; often the experience getting inside is more fulfilling than what's inside the building anyway. So, yes, it is worth the trouble.

2) There are some places where something like a construction hat would come in handy: we call those pieces "credibility props" that set up the user/wearer to look legitimate. Now, this doesn't necessarily decrease suspicion because if you still don't look the part it'll seem just that much more unlikely that you're where you're allowed. For example, if you're 16 and wearing a construction worker costume it'll really stick out and make you all the more vulnerable. Using credibility props also increase the consequences if you are caught because it shows the entry premeditated and shows that you know what you're doing is illegal.

Usually it's just best to dress like an urban kid--which you are--so you look natural and are more likely to be overlooked. It's better if people's eyes move right over you without notice than attracting their attention and scrutiny with unusual dress and such. But that's just my opinion; some people love playing dress-up and romping in plain sight.

Glass detailed and explained what I was thinking much better. I agree with his advice.

Oh one other tip. It seems that if it's a multi-story building, there is almost always a window or door that can be accessed up there. People forget to secure the buildings against monkeys.

If you cant find a way in on ground level, start climbing. Most likely there will always be a 2nd floor window busted in and if that fails, go onto the roof. Every single place will have an entrance from a subroof or main roof, depending on the type of building it is. Thats how i get into most of my places.

Usually places that have some sort of protection against nature and vandals are better than the ones that are open year-around.

I'd agree Access All Areas would be a good start. It'll answer most of the questions you have.

Typically if its boarded up that means it's less likely that it will be protected with IR sensors and the like, which is a good thing.

Second credibility props can work, but typically they make it hard to blend in to the background before and after. Some of the drainers here get high-vis jackets, hard hats, and even block off manholes with traffic cones and the like, in the middle of traffic.

If it is locked or boarded up you have to think about if it will really be worth getting into. you have to judge how well boarded it is and how much probability of getting in trouble there is. i think if it is just boarded up then it wouldnt be to bad to get into but if it is surrounded in fence with dogs and cops, i wouldnt risk it.

about the construction equiptment as a cover, that isnt a bad idea at all. it is pretty ingenious but you have to think about how plausible it is in the area and how probable it is to carry around on an exploration.

good luck and i hope it helped.

Well the equipment could work, but if a cop sees it and decides to ask questions or what not. Then thats when you get fucked. Then you'll be in even more trouble. You gotta be careful with trying that even tho its a pretty good idea.

I got one of the last copies of AAA Amazon had in stock and it was more than worth it.
Wonderful book and you should definitely get it if you're starting out exploring. Gives you info on a lot of things you've wondered and a lot of things you never even considered.

I was wondering what people bring on their trips:

Is there something that you have found extremely useful?

What have you brought that you thought would be great that didn't work out?

is there anything season specific that you have?
