| | | Japanese Ghost Town- AshioDozan < on 1/11/2009 5:37 PM >
| | | Ashiodozan is famous in Japan as the site of some severe environmental damage- copper was mined there for 400 years, with 39,000 living in the narrow valley in the south Tochigi mountains at the peak of production. Sulfuric acid gases were produced by the smelting process, rained down on the surrounding mountains, and killed all plant-life within a massive radius. The last of the mines and factories closed 40 years ago. A few months ago I went with a friend and we explored the factory and abandoned train station, as well as a power hub building, a shrine, a mine complex and many tumbledown apartments. I wrote up a series of 4 posts on Ashiodozan on my site- here are the links: 1. History and Relics- http://www.michael...n-haikyo-1-history 2. Shrine and Apartments- http://www.michael...own-haikyo-2-life/ 3. Power Hub and Mine Complex- http://www.michael...-and-mine-complex/ 4. Train Station and Factory- http://www.michael...and-train-station/ Here's a few pictures: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

| | | Yes, Kappa Pia. There are a few interesting places left in Aichi, but Toyo Bowl has been demolished now. A couple of hospitals and hotels which I am thinking of going to though.
