Near Cochrane, last spring

This is my first real post here and just wanted to share my experience.

On kind of whim after going to Cochrane to visit the polar bears, I decided that we should go check out a few places in what I thought was the area (I was surprised how long the drive ended up taking). [If you're not sure where Cochrane is, it's about 2 hours north of Timmins, which is 3 hours north of Sudbury, which is 4-5 hours north of Toronto.]

I find pretty much ALL of Northern Ontario to be a gold mine (heh.) But I wouldn't mind some more seasoned veterans of exploring N. Ont to give me some tips (especially about wildlife) but I'll get to that in a bit.

We drove past a series of abandoned houses and farms in search of the town, only to come to a crossroads. One way went onto Tembec property and had lots of scary signs, so we followed the other way and came to some sort of tire graveyard at the end of the road. Wasn't all that exciting. Just piles and piles of very large tires, likely from the forestry and mining vehicles. Some lazy people decided to dump their tires in the river instead.

Then we drove back to check out some of the houses. There are something like 6 or 8 residents still remaining in the "town" and I'm pretty sure we figured out which houses they lived in but still I find rural neighbours to be very nosy so we had to keep the skulking to a minimum.

The first house:

It seemed to be vacant but the windows looked brand new. And there was a really loud bang from inside it. My bf is from north. ont, and he was concerned about it because he said that bears often take up residence in old buildings for the winter. And it being spring, it was likely that if an animal was in there, it would be easily woken/pissed off. I don't how true this is but I wasn't really in the mood to tempt a grumpy bear. There were no tires tracks in the snow driveway, but I suppose people could be in there as well. What is the chance really of a bear/wolf/rabid fox/etc in a place like that?

The second house:

This one was definitely vacant. And for sale. I was tempted to call the owner up and buy it. I'm sure it wouldn't be all that much.

The main room. Yes, that is a giant gaping hole in the back where I assume a trailer used to be since the house had no bedrooms.

The washroom/laundry room.

The kitchen.

It freaked me out a little because there is a new container of coffee there. And in the muck room, there were very large rubber boots.

And that's all I got because I should mention that apart from being afraid of getting eaten by bears, or getting shot, my bf absolutely HATES doing this. HATES it. As an engineer by profession he's super careful about structures and things and does not like the idea of collapsing and rotting buildings. And the back end (including the muck room and porch) of this one was collapsing for sure. The melting snow didn't help things either.

These are some of the neighbouring buildings to the previous one.

And finally, this is as far as we got towards Arpin [About halfway between Norembega and Arpin]. We got stuck a few times in the mud before deciding it was best to try again later.

And I strongly suggest not taking the logging road from Stimson back to Iroquois Falls unless you have a vehicle that can handle it and you are experienced with them. ;) It didn't really save much time at all.

And that's it! Sorry it was so long. And next time I go out I'll take better/more interesting pics.

(Did I do this post right?)

You were right, it does appear to be quite a gold mine up there! Those were some nice pictures, I hope you get the time to explore them further though, looks awesome.

I guess it's cos of all the copper/nickel/uranium/gold mines that towns sprouted and then died when the mines closed. North of Timmins, I don't think it's possible to drive anywhere without seeing abandoned buildings. And I'm sure there's much, much more that I just don't know about.

I hope to go back up there soon and be a little braver.

I guess instead of starting a new thread I should just add these here. They were mostly all taken in the same week.

I got a tip from my bf's coworker that there was a ghost town called Barber's Bay. Well, I don't think it is cos we went there and it looked fine. But we did want to stop and see Frederick House... And much to my disappointment, there isn't actually a house. It is literally a dirt road about 50 feet long. And a sign saying that this is where Frederick House was.

So we continued east, randomly driving and turning and came across a road with many sad places.

this was the first. I didn't want to trespass there. Everything was collapsed.

Then this place. It had a yard full of junk and 3 burnt down trailers.

Couldn't tell if the trailers were torched before or after they were abandoned.

Now, there were A LOT of such places along the roads we took, mostly farms but it was getting late. On the main highway back to Timmins, there were still more.

This was the only building that wasn't fenced off, but it's pretty obvious why. It was completely falling apart. The mud was very deep however getting to it and I was improperly prepared for that...

The following are all along the same highway but all had tall chainlink fences with barbwire closing them off.

Looks like an outhouse almost. I'm not a hunter but perhaps this is some sort of shelter? Edit: Could be a "line cabin" for hunting/trapping.

This looks to be fenced off because of sinkholes. They are a very common problem in the area and caused by old mining operations, that didn't take enough care with closing procedures and backfilling. I would say they are probably the biggest concern about exploring these places. Unpredictable and very dangerous.

Then there was this place

It's hard to see, but there was a red/orange building to the right, set far back. Brand new. And it had 3 cop cars parked outside. There were 3 abandoned sheds/houses blocking this for the most part though. So I don't know what's in this shed but it's curious! I wasn't about to crawl onto police property to find out. Also, there's a river running down the left side of this place.

I have a few more exteriors of some places in Timmins itself but I'll keep those for another time when I get better pics. Ideally, I would love to explore the abandoned mine tunnels that apparently run under the city and pretty much everywhere (like the abandoned golf course) ...but it's beyond stupid to attempt it since they're all shifting and collapsing (sinkholes, too) all the time. But it would be cool to see it without dying. ;) Edit: NEVERMIND! I was just told that unless I have scuba gear and a way to drill through thick concrete walls, it ain't ever happening ;)

So, yeah! There's loads to explore up there if you've got big rubber boots and a trusty car. And maybe mining experience, heh.

Hey! I'm sure I've seen these when I was Flickr surfing, right? Great to see them again. It's such a drag being with someone who doesn't 'get it', isn't it? My hubby is a chicken shit, too. lol

I still find it strange when people mention they've seen "me" (in this case my pics) somewhere else online. It's pretty cool!

LOL, it is a drag! ;) He really doesn't want anything resembling a criminal record, lol.

I wouldn't want a criminal record either, but if I read all the mumbo-jumbo right, being caught trespassing won't give you a record. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but if you are ONLY trespassing (not vandalizing, etc) you will get a ticket you have to pay, then it's done...like a parking ticket. And it also seemed to me that you only get the ticket if they ask you to leave and you don't. Hopefully I'm wrong because I'm too old and responsible to get a rap sheet started now. lol

Trespass to Property Act is a Provincial Offence which means that it's like a speeding ticket. You're issued a PON (pronounced pawn) which stands for Provincial Offence Notice. It's about a $70 fine.

I believe that the property owner has to want to lay charges, the police cannot just come up to you and fine you for being on someone's property. This may be a prearranged situation between the police and the owner, or the owner may be sought out. Don't quote me on this part though, Exkalibur could probably elaborate upon this.

Um, that should read that I hope I'm NOT wrong...just for the record. So does a PON go on any 'record'? I know it's documented somewhere, but can I still volunteer at the kids school? lol

You're second paragraph is what I remember reading, too.

Depends on your vulnerable sector screening. A PON/TPA would go on CPIC and local system for the agency that caught you. I think it goes onto another system as well, but cannot remember the name of it. (basically ANY charge/name/vehicle plate run goes onto CPIC, so when another agency runs you, it shows up. I hear it all the time- like when OPP run someone or a plate and Toronto Police has ran the plate for a unrelated reason- even if they are not pulled over or charged.)

I'm sure Exkal can explain further when he finally stumbles onto this thread.
