Are there any good wreckers/junkyards in the GTA, preferably in the west end? I've been wanting to take my camera to one for months, ever since seeing Sudbury's "Sudbury and MSGSudz go car shopping..." and Jono's "Where old cats go to die..." threads.

Not sure of anything in the GTA (although I'm sure there's lots), but heading east there are some awesome yards. In Demorestville, there's Roblin's auto wreckers, which specializes in classic/vintage stuff. There's also Minaker's in the same area, that also has a lot of classics.

Thanks Bandi. They are a little further than I had hoped but I may just have to find an excuse to head out that way.

The Roblins website actually has a "virtual tour" (which is really just a gallery of snapshots). There are lots of great shots there. It's exactly the kind of place I was thinking of.

Back to google I go...

Not a problem. Is there any kind of car you're looking for in particular, or just like this stuff in general?

Photographic interest. I'd prefer older cars - pre 1980 - but anything really. Abandoned would be a bonus.

Thanks again.

I just noticed one in my neighbourhood. At least I think it's a junk yard.

Get on google maps or msn live search maps (bird's eye view rocks). Search for [Turnberry & Union Toronto]. This is up in the St. Clair / Old Weston Area.

I have no idea if, or how, you can get in. I may have to swing by for a closer look.

Hope this helps.

Minakers scrap auto field (which was awesome) is no more. They scrapped it a while back.

There's a crapload of cars in that place, I used to go by it on the GO train all the time. Not sure about getting in, they'll probably have someone accompany you if they do grant permission (they seem to be more of the car recycling scrapyard rather then the pull your own parts type).

Contact info from Google Maps:
Stark Iron & Metal Co‎
125 Union Street, Toronto, ON M6N 3N4‎
(416) 654-3464

There's also the old G. Solways & Sons just north of Bloor/Dundas on Ernest, they're a much smaller operation that scraps all sorts of stuff (haven't seen too many cars however). If you want to have a look around the area, they're just off the north end of the Bloor GO station.

Solway Metal Sales
26 Ernest Avenue, Toronto, ON M6P 3M7‎
(416) 531-1131

Here's a quickie shot of part of their place from a passing GO turd:

Yeah that looks cool. You can see a ton of people walking around on the bird's eye view.

Alas, this one has dogs roaming around. Took my pooch for a walk by there today and, sure enough, they started barking at us through the fence.

Impressive mountain of cars though. A huge pile in one spot.

There's also a huge one found just outside of Courtice. It's active as well, but at least there aren't any dogs.

If you're willing to drive to Cambridge, there's a small junk yard with some vintage vehicles.

Thanks micro. I'm not really a dog person - particularly junkyard dogs so "there aren't any dogs" has a nice ring to it.

Cambridge isn't too far from me. I have another place in Cambridge on my "to do" list anyway. Thanks phrenzee.

You know that if you want in a Junkyard you just say you are looking for auto parts for several projects.

Might come in handy to have a few car names and years and actual parts you want already named.

The list Skold gave has all you need right there. The one on eastern ave is right on the beach and in an interesting area. Theres one at the most eastern part of scarborough and its pretty big, Right near the zoo.

good luck.

I will defeat that which was once untouchable only so that I may now move on
