Look! A light in the trees!
| | | Marine Junkyard < on 1/7/2009 1:23 AM >
| | | This is a big marine junking operation on Lake Erie that I had been meaning to visit for many years. I heard that it was about to wind up operations, so I got off my behind and got permission through a friend to wander around the site for a day with my camera. There was a bit of everything here, from boats (duh!) to heavy equipment to industrial salvage (see the last pic for Nuclear Automation Inc). And lots and lots of glorious rust! | | | Having permission sorta takes a bit of the edge away, but it IS nice not having to scurry every time I hear footsteps coming!

| | | Beautiful set of pictures. It is awesome that you got permission too, though personally I would have been too tempted to jump up on one of those ships and pretend I'm out at sea... Which is why I doubt I'd have gotten permission

| | | Nice! Though please go back and get some basic documentarian shots (not that your artsy fartsy pics aren't fine for the artsy crowd, just sayin' is all).

No offense, your pics are fine. I was curious about establishing shots, to give context to your close ups. So, yes, beautiful shots. I like 'em and welcome to UER. Believe me, I;m the least of your worries here.

| | | Faint, don't take Fedge's comment as an insult - he's praising you, and offering hints that'll help you here. He's a good guy, just a little gruff sometimes. Artsy shots are like croutons. Sure, they're the best part of the salad, but it'd be weird if you were served a bowl of them with no lettuce. A lot of the crowd here are brilliant photographers who enjoy finding the optimum lighting for a cracked doorknob. You've got to keep in mind that there's also a good chunk who doesn't care about the beauty in peeled paint, they're more interested in seeing what's in every room of the house. Check out some of Fedge's locations - he does an amazing job of making you feel like you've seen it all. Your audience gets a much richer experience from your pics if you give them a few "broad strokes" shots to explain the basic layout of the location. We love context. It brings a whole new level to the artsy shots when you give them a framework to fit into. That way, we can understand how you picked those angles/shots out of the bigger environment, and applaud you for it. Hope that makes sense. Anyway, welcome to the group! Looking forward to your next location.

| | | The second shot reminds me of that cheezy movie Anaconda, where that old boat was trapped in the amazon.
And when you finally disappear, We'll just say you were never here. |

| | | I should have put a smiley after the "ouch" comment. I did totally miss the big picture with my photos at this site. I didn't realize it until I was selecting photos to post here. Hard to believe that out of 300 shots I didn't get one single overview! (A shot from where I parked at the top of the hill at the entrance would have been perfect - aargh!)The place was so overwhelmingly full of stuff that I found myself shooting in close just to simplify and make sense of the jumble. It was a bit like laying in the bottom of a bathtub - the only way to see the horizon was up. Next time I shoot context first, feed my artsy-phartsy soul second. Fedge, no offense taken - ya can't learn without criticism. And Maybe - thanks for your softer words!
