When I click on a user's msn icon, it goes to ICQs website with a user not found message, seeing as that its a person's passport email... I don't think its just me..... Unless im on crack.

Thanks Av

This forum currently does not support MSN, nor is there an "MSN" icon or "passport".

I suggest you switch to a messaging client that isn't so retardedly stupid, like ICQ.

Av, I'm pretty sure the ICQ icon is now an MSN Messenger logo, which is strange, and slightly absurd. And if not, there definately is an MSN Messenger logo there for Some reason. Should check that.

yeah i didn't have the ICQ icon handy so i temporarily put that one in.

anyway...

<rant>

MSN sucks. it's the only messenger program that doesn't let you rename people. now, normally this would not be a big deal, but for some reason people in MSN like to make their names 100+ characters long, with all sorts of random shit in it.

also, since people change their names frequently, there's no way to know which person is which. someone named "john the guy form hat asja /," on your MSN list may be the same guy who was named "david and vof is the BOMBAH" yesterday. there's no way to know.

also, let's compare messaging clients. which one is the best?

- MSN forces you to create a "passport", which takes forever to do and involves giving your name and address
- MSN, YIM, nor AIM support offline messaging. what the hell?!

ICQ is on top. Why?

- Offline messaging. You can send a message to someone even when they are offline, and they'll get it when they next sign on.
- Most availability. ICQ is available on all operating systems through a variety of different apps, and also PDAs, cell phones, via Java, etc. There's no messaging client that's as widely available.
- No bullshit signups. It takes less than a minute to make an account.
- Renaming. You can name people whatever you want on your list, and it stays that way.

Clearly, ICQ is the winner.

I agree with Av. I still have to talk to A LOT of people that refuse to leave AIM or MSNM, so I use Trillian. It adds in a ton of functionality that is otherwise lost with the other individual clients and keeps everything in one tidy place.

I do miss MSNM's voice chat now and then, but there are things like teamspeak for this. It would be sweet if trillian could interface MSN's voice chat someday. Perhaps there is an extention for that...

I just wish we could have ICQ back as it was when I started using it... somewhere around version 98 I think. Pre-AOL screwing it up. Those were the days!

I only use MSN, I have no problem figuring out who the people are in my list, I right click and see there email address.

And as for my passport, msn doesn't have a stitch of information on me, my entire account is a faux account, not one piece of information is correct. Pseudo name, pseudo city, just because it asks for your name and address doesn't mean you actually have to give it.

Then again though, I don't chat much on the net... so heh, I guess it doesn't matter

I didn't mind ICQ at first.... but I'm just not a chat person, so no point in having it...

Right click to find email ? Wow, that's great. I have over 300 people on my contact list... imagine if I wanted to find one person. I'd have to right click each one. Not only that, but I'd have to memorize all of their email addresses.

Unacceptable.

~shrugs~ I've got the emails memorized (or at least quickly recognizable) of those people that are important on my list.

And yes, I agree with Servo - I would go back to using good ol' 11391721 if I could get ICQ back from where it was still a good program, before it got too cluttered with excess crap.

I mean, honestly... who uses the SMS functions anyway?

Actually, Yahoo Messenger does have offline messaging. I login to usually a dozen or so offline messages a day.

Yahoo's about all I use anymore. Three years ago, I swore by ICQ. It's changed so much though, that I dislike it now. Plus, it seems like most people these days, especially ones who are fairly new to computers, use other things like Yahoo or AIM or MSN. I'm totally with you on the MSN and AIM-hating though.

I use MSN. Sure ya gotta sign up for a passport but you only do it once and then it's done. Besides, download the handy little app called MSNPlus and it fixes every one of your anti-MSN complaints Av, except for the offline messaging; as well as adding all kinds of features ICQ doesn't have.

So there I was, in this creepy old hallway...

So, the people who use MSN don't get to have a button that will show thier email just because you have "issues" with MSN? UGH! Im not even going to get started... Its like a Mac Vs. PC debate. I use ICQ and MSN, and I prefer MSN, so bite me.

no, there's no button for MSN because i don't know the web-code for MSN and don't really have the time to find it.

the whole "i hate MSN" was just an aside; a rant.

I too use Trillian and I'm never going back. Though it does have the occasional compatibility issue.

And AIM does have offline messaging. Simply direct connect to someone then sign off and VIOLA!

I'm talking about when the other person is offline BEFORE you talk to them.

Like, I sign on, and want to send Jim a message. But jim is offline. In ICQ, i'd be able to send it anyway and Jim would get it when he next signs on. With MSN, you'd have to email it or some crap.
