| | | To address both topics of the subject, I find my (typically short, maybe 15') length of rope replaces the need for a crowbar, because 75% of stuck manhole covers have a hole in them - either a small square hole where a crowbar-device fits, or they're the simple grated type. You then take any vertical object (I've even used small branches) tied to the rope, drop it vertically through the shaft - pull it back up horizontally and use it to lift the heavy cover. Won't work 100% of course, but neither will a crowbar. Both of them are useful for dealing with the weight; not particularly the rust.

Clearly you've never dealt with a stuck cover buddy. OP, there is lots of SRT/rope discussion at darkplaces.co.uk , and a big SRT FAQ.

| | | Electrical tape works wonders for getting interesting camera angles, especially when climbing stuff. And as far as ascending rope, if it is not frozen or wet you can use a pair of $2 prussicks just as effectively as a pair of $60 ascending devices.

Best to tape the tripod to stuff, and not the camera.

Forget about bolt cutters. They are very hard to explain away when you are stopped and searched by your local constabulary.

Yup. Forget the bolt cutters. Impossible to explain away. Okay so hypothetically say I wanted to break a lock
Would spraying it with wart remover and then administering a good kick with steel toes or hitting it with a D-Cell MagLight; be sufficient? Usually Spy Movie use liquid nitrogen for the same effect. Keep a medical kit in your backpack; toss the wart remover in there. If questioned a family member bought you the med kit for christmas, and the wart remover came with it; you just never bothered to remove it.

Apparently it is possible; with compressed air. http://www.instruc...Freeze-A-Lock-Off! But compressed air is still a little dodgy to be carrying with you ... not that wart remover isn't kinda weird, but at least I could throw that with my med kit.

OK that's pretty cool. I'd actually wondered about that before because I've had the compressed air turn into frost when using it normally. It would definitely be a bit conspicuous to be carrying around if you were to find yourself in with The Law, but still better than carrying around bolt cutters or a crow bar I would imagine. You could always try and play it off as drug use... or something. Or go with something a little more plausible and say you use it to clean off your camera gear.

| | | A lock that crappy could be picked by a novice faster than it took to freeze and break. Less conspicuous/loud/havingtocarryaroundahammer as well.

| | | although this thread has NOTHING to do with breaking locks, people used to bust open master locks all the time back in high school during gym by threading a sock through it and yanking on it hard.. pad locks aren't exactly high tech security, just sayin..

I'd recommend using gaffers tape, it's what I use. Electrical tape will stretch and break under load.

They'll work just as effectively as a some ascenders if you're ascending about 10 feet. Not that prusiks aren't bad. you can ascend double ropes, and the price difference is well worth discomfort. They just aren't as good as dedicated ascenders. Tibloc's, made by petzl are pretty good. They're sold as "emergency ascenders" but they only cost about $20. On the actual topic, I have decided to always bring rope with me, even if I think I'm no going to need it.
