|  | | | I got into some trouble over this one. My girlfriend and I had a lot of fun over New Years but unfortunately the outcome was a hangover and a bit of very painful frostbite on her feet (long story). I did my best to take care of her and be a loving boyfriend during the day -- but I learned of this building on a preservation website and could not withstand the call to explore. Therefore I called a friend and abandoned (temporarily) my ailing girlfriend in order to go exploring.
This is the Riverview Commercial Club and is slated for demolition in early 2009. The building dates to the 1920s and served as a community civic center for most of its lifetime. It was abandoned in 1990.
My friend and I entered with high hopes because we learned that the building once contained a bowling alley. It would have been great to play a last game in the darkness but unfortunately only the concrete foundations remained.
The building has been wiped of almost everything interesting. However, I firmly believe that every building has its own character -- if not physically, then at least historically. The following sign was a pleasant surprise:
I like to imagine what people discussed over beer and BBQ on this date in September, 1973. Richard Nixon was into the second term of his presidency but Watergate was starting to brew. A few days later the infamous Pinochet violently overthrew the Chilean government and began his dictatorship.
It is possible that Nixon wasn't a conversation topic in September '73 but surely he was the topic during the next BBQ event. On September 8, 1974, Ford stunned his own staff (and the world) by pardoning Richard Nixon. Convenient, eh?
Anyway, as I mentioned before, the building has been stripped over the course of several owners. Most of rooms are filled with junk and cleaning supplies, including the Urban Exploration cliches of decapitated doll heads and cracked toilets. In fact, both at once!
Sadly, we did encounter a dead, frozen mugwai. The plight of this poor species was brought to the world in a documentary by Spielberg in 1984.
My friend was understanding and allowed me to pick up dinner for the GF on the way back. I spent today doing extra chores. All is good.
