Remember the Titans

Dodging deportation, a dedicated Yank and dodgy Aussie set out in the Autumn morn' on a trip of fortitude and finesse. They were keen to crack a tomb of histories darkest days, the secretive Titan missile silos. There was no margin for error this time around, it was all or nothing and a long drive back; destination Guantanamo.B

We rocked up sometime around sunset, the evening sky lit up the landscape in a purple twilight hue. Not wanting to raise suspicion we hid the car behind a large prickly shrubs, perfect ninja camo for the the giant yellow SS 'splore.

<pic from Cap'n Cheddar>

It was quickly getting cold, man up I told myself as I tried to shrug it off. We both pushed forward with the knowledge that it was just a minor inconvenience. The pay off would be worth one thousand days of frost.

Far out from the city limits, in the heart of the Arkansas wild we stood above a small yet solid recessed steal barn door. We worked for a while, clearing away a decade of thorny shrubbery and grime with a comically small trowel. Reaching down we each grabbed a handle and swung them open. The heavy doors moaned like an old man on Viagra as they gave way for the first time in a decade. I waved my light over the chilled wrought iron stairs below. "No time to waste" we said to each other as we climbed in and sealed the doors behind us.

Each step down the rickety staircase echoed like a shotgun blast through the silent landscape above. Shadows from the criss-cross railing danced across the walls with each descending step.

1.

Soon we found we had arrived at the first blast door of the facility. I placed my lamp on the ground to cast some light around the small basement. I took hold of the chain that secured the door and heaved it open. Surprisingly little effort was needed to move this finely hung 3 tonne behemoth. The fruits of a year's careful planning had ripened.

2.

The facility had been decommissioned back in the late 70's, serving as a high alert station for what could have been the darkest days of man. The dust had settled thick on the ground and the left over machinery had long since rusted solid.

Perhaps man can only learn from their mistakes, how close did we come?

As a combined effort it sure did. It's a privilege to visit a location and to not have a single scrap of graffiti, like a opening a time capsule. This is certainly one to be remembered.

Kudos to my friendly partner's hardcore recon work.

The whole site was accessable except for the original silo and tunnel leading to the silo. To make the Russians happy when the site was decommissioned they had to collapse those, seal the rest off and allow the Spy Sats to float overhead and have a look; which is what they did.

The original complex looks like this:

Everything to the right of the center entry was filled in as shown in picture #3.

There was a sump pump down in the basement to keep the site dry so I assume when they first built it the ground was 'wetter'. When we visited the place was dry enough to suck the moisture from your eyes.

Damn, I was hoping with the mention of Cheddar, that this was in AZ. Anyway, this is a gorgeous set and I will be looking forward to attempting to explore some of these silos when I move to Phoenix in June as they seem slightly more abundant out in the drier climes.

Pretty sweet, the thick doors help to show how serious these sites were.
