Not related to Detroit PD, so I figured I'd branch off from

Here is a large, albeit excellent, file on Cass Tech.

http://www.bureaul...iles/CT_Report.pdf

My first year at Cass (Fall 1985) was the first year the new wing opened and some of the older areas closed.

The new wing added:
- new 1st floor classrooms (IIRC mostly for the music department),
- a new basement gym and locker rooms (replacing the old 1st and 7th floor gyms and I guess a locker room too but I have no idea where),
- a new 2nd floor lunchroom (replacing the old 7th? floor lunchroom),
- a new basement swimming pool (replacing the old 1st floor pool),
- a new bank of elevators (unlike the ones in the older building, anyone could use these.)
- a few "forums" (basically classrooms set up like mini lecture halls).

Additionally, not sure if they also opened in 1985, but classrooms along one hallway (south side of the school) in the original building on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors were renovated around the same time and followed a similar cinder brick and paint style of the new wing.

Needless to say, I wish I had been a bit more curious about Cass Tech's older areas back in my youth. Looking at the floor plans in the pdf, it really brings back how these were really two buildings with a limited number of access points between the two.

Except for the periodic trip to the bookstore on the 7th floor, I don't think anyone really ever had a need to go to the 7th or 8th floors after the new wing opened so I'm least familiar with those floors. Nevertheless, if anyone has any questions, I'd welcome a nudge to my memory to see what I can dig up.

That's mighty tore up.
Is this whole building abandoned? I'm assuming that's the new school next door?

Yes, the entire building has been vacated and the new school is next door.

There was a fire in the old building, I think about a year ago that damaged some of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors. So, in addition to the garbage seen in some of the youtube videos, the building now also has some fire damage.
