|  | | | The Independence Mental Health Institute is still open and active. In the southwest corner there's a building that's been abandoned for about 40 years. It's chained shut and all the lower windows are barred shut. (entrance information removed) This place is virtually untouched and I couldn't find any evidence that anyone had been in this building since 1994. There's a little bit of litter from squatters (with '94 expiration dates) and some make shift beds that are rotten. There's no graffiti anywhere and the place is safe, structurally. There is asbestos, so be warned. The complex is in the south west part of Independence and should be really easy to locate as the whole thing is still active except this building.

Second, Slim Jim and I were here a few years ago. They've really cleaned it out since then, it looks like. ...I would like to note, however, that it was FAR easier for us to get in than it was for you - they seem to be making it a little more difficult to access after removing all the neat stuff there used to be in there.

They offered to let us set up a time to come back with special clearance to look around, but we declined since we didn't feel like driving all the way back. We hit Chamberlain instead, which turned out to be a much more enjoyable exploration anyway.

Chamberlain schmaimberlain. If you're allowed to go into their abandonments with CLEARANCE, as well as the rest of the place... come on. That's fucking awesome.
Or by "with special clearance," did they mean, "Our guided tour?" Do not want that.

Yeah, but I'd probably have to get a better camera than my LG Dare (phone) to go under the guise that I'm a photog.

It was late afternoon (several years ago now) that we were there. When we got caught, we were told we could come back the NEXT DAY to set up an appointment to come back at a later date. That would be two additional seperate trips out to Independence and back at a time when my schedule was way busier than it is now, and I really didn't want to go to the trouble of filling out paperwork, giving them my ID, and yadda yadda yadda. I've seen a lot of cool old buildings. The ones at Independence are certainly cool and old, and I should probably consider returning, but seriously, it isn't much of a priority.

We went to a recently abandoned one northwest of the Kirk, and I think the one he did was the really dilapidated looking one farther out in the cornfields southwest of the Kirk. There's another one right next to the one we did that might be accessible and looked in good condition.

Thats pretty standard for institutions I think. ETMJ, Jade & I ran into the same kind of thing at the RTC before it closed and there were still patients there. Its always cool when places are willing to allow photographers access like that as long as you fill out the paperwork and such.
