Dinsdale Consolidated High School in Dinsdale, IA

Last weekend I headed out to the abandoned school in Dinsdale, IA. This town is tiny and falling apart, but the seclusion means no one around to care that you're in their abandoned school building. The place is caving in drastically and appears to have been abandoned for at least 30 years. (removed entrance information) None of the upper floors are accessible, as the floors have all caved in. Any web search will get you directions to the town and the school is the third building on the north as you get in town.

that shot of the gym is awesome and it still looks like a neat place on the outside..too bad the floors are caved in.

You ever get out to Dubuque much? Or for that matter, do you do much exploring in your local cities?

I've done a lot of exploring in Cedar Falls and Waterloo, but there's not a lot here of interest. I found several cool places around Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, but that was about 4 years ago, and I know several have been demolished. I'm looking for anything decent in the eastern Iowa area, and I can always make a weekend trip out of it.

I'm in Dubuque and have pretty much nobody to explore with locally (except for when friends come down from the Twin Cities). There's mostly abandoned mines and underground stuff here, but there are a couple abandonments a little further away.

I've explored a number of fun places in Waterloo (Slim Jim used to live there), but the best one is being torn down now, and another good one seems to now be sealed up. There's plenty of little abandoned schools and stuff though, if you drive around and look.

I haven't tried exploring anything in Iowa City since we got busted in the steam tunnels there a few years ago.

As for Cedar Rapids, it seems to have lots of possibility and promise, and I drove around it a couple months ago. I'm not sure where to start, though.

If you want to set up a get-together or plan an expedition or something, PM me sometime.

Oh, come on. It wasn't THAT bad: didn't deter me from UE at all. I still LOVE how Jim handled it, hahahaha. God, he's fucking awesome.

I never said it was "THAT bad".... I just haven't felt any need to poke around in IC since that time. I've had much cooler places to visit and stuff to see.

And as for Jim, he's my main muthafuckin' homeboy.

I'm glad everyone likes that photo. We'd been in the place for about 1.5 hours at that point and it was 13 degrees out. Being able to get a decent photo without a tripod was an accomplishment, and it's not digitally touched up or anything.

Well I don't mean to blend into all of the other posts too much, But the gym was a great shot. Totally love the BB hoop. Its a shame the other floors weren't accessable, but to be honest, that roof even looked sketchy in the gym, I'm not sure how long I would want to stick around that place without chancing my luck of something caving in. Great shots, thanks for the post

That gym shot looks like a gym in an abandoned school I explored in the country south of Waterloo. While I was inside, a large group of people came in to play paintball, and I found myself face to face with a gun several times. I think I scared them because they didn't want to accidentally shoot me because I wasn't wearing gear like they were. Oddly enough, part of that school is still in use as cheap college student apartments.

Cedar Rapids is the land of emptiness in terms of exploring. I've driven all over that town and never found anything, except another explorer from Iowa City found part of an old plant that was in the process of being demo'ed when we explored it. If the Quaker plant ever goes abandoned, it'll have to be one of the best places in the region. Huge buildings connected by catwalks many stories up.

I want to be different. But I want to be different just like everybody else, because if I really were different, everybody would think I was crazy and weird.

Iowa is Minnesota's bitch. There's an art to pooping.

Is that the place you sent Paul and I to in an ice storm a couple years ago?

I'm sure Cedar Rapids has plenty of abandoned flooded out buildings now.

If I remember correctly, I found an abandoned apartment building in Cedar Rapids close to the downtown back in 2007. I will have to consult my pictures and memory to find out.

This can't be the same place then. This whole building is falling apart and there are no roads or paths even leading to the building. Even the sidewalks are gone.

I was with him when he found that. I'm bummed that it's been torn down since, as that place was really cool.
