Bridal Veil Creek

I don't see this one mentioned a lot on the local UE sites. Bridal Veil Creek is an old creek that was entombed in concrete during the industrialization of southeast Minneapolis. The original creek drained at a waterfall along the Mississippi bluff; the waterfall was a popular recreation/picnic spot.

A detail from a stereograph, late 1880s:

The main outfall structure is pretty interesting inside and outside.

However, the main creek tunnel is a relatively boring oval concrete tube that gets smaller and smaller in the upstream direction. We reached Highway 94 before deciding that our backs were complaining too loudly. The overall tunnel system is quite complex and we will head back soon.

There's also some cool stuff under it, you can see where the sandstone has eroded away to reveal an old sewer tunnel. You can crawl around in the overbreakage void outside the sewer lining, but it doesn't go far.

Supposedly if you go far enough up Bridal Veil, there's a junction with a larger drain going back down towards campus. I'm not sure how far it would be though.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

Thanks for the tip -- I did not catch that during the first examination since I was focused on the creek. I will go back and look more carefully. I've always appreciated the bluffs in that area (from 94 to Ford) because of the multitude of tunnels -- almost one aligned with every street.

Yeah, I should have clarified. The current outfall is fully reconstructed. Further, the creek watershed has been so industrialized, drained, blocked, botched, etc. that the creek is only a "creek" during precipitation events. It is nothing like Basset Creek in Minneapolis.

The Mississippi Watershed Management Organization (http://www.mwmo.org) has a 49+ meg comprehensive study of the creek -- including history, tunnel maps, etc. Look for the Bridal Veil Creek Subwatershed Desk Study under the Publications section of their web site.

Anyway, to answer your question, the outfall is a concrete and bridge structure with a number of square openings for the water. This is set a few feet back from the cliff, which I understand is specifically constructed as to simulate the appearance of a cascading, natural waterfall.

I don't have any good pictures but here is a fuzzy closeup.

No -- that evening was bitter cold. Good time to go draining and stay toasty warm.

Maybe this isn't the one I was thinking of. Did it used to have a ram's head inside on the wall? (or something similar to a ram)

Apologies to K8 for digging up her old pics, they're still on the UER server.

Nice photos. The artwork reminds me of parts at West Kittsondale.
