| | | A thought just crossed my mind, are spiders or other nasties/animals attracted to infrared light? Because the last thing I need is for a giant spider to find interest in me.

| | | Yeah, it looks like they might be a tad IR-happy, but I think it might be the bugs mistaking it for heat... As long as you don't stand still for more than four hours I'm sure it'd be fine...

| | | Posted by Mantis I don't know how long it lasts, but at Target and Walmart right now they have night vision (infrared) goggles in the toy department for only $50! I bought one and I must say it's worth it. Just don't expect it to be top of the line like what the military uses, but it's pretty decent. It takes 5 AA batteries.

what brand? *edit* nevermind... My router is being a pain in the ass tonight. (About time I flash it with DD-WRT) It keeps displaying only half the posts and dropping my connections; I just saw the arstechnica link. [last edit 12/2/2008 3:47 AM by \/adder - edited 1 times]

| | | Man. You're better off with some $400 pair of Generation I goggles...seriously.... I want Gen III but of course I don't have $5,000....so I'm waiting patiently for some Gen II's to get cheap. I believe some have the option of turning off the infrared so that you can't be detected and it won't bounce off windows and such, enabling you to see inside vehicles and buildings. At least, I think that's what I read....could be wrong. I've also wondered about hunter's heatseekers for finding guards (they're used to find dying deer). A very, very poor man's tool, I guess.

It sounds like a fun toy, except that 1st gen gear is not even $400 anymore, but actually $100, I think there are some better options. http://www.buy.com...=17070&dcaid=17070 [last edit 12/2/2008 5:27 PM by MindHacker - edited 1 times]

| | | These sound pretty neat. Gen-1 gear will give ya better illumination and image BUT cheap Gen-1 kit are usually spotting scopes, not actual goggles. As for the issue with these only showing one image- has anyone tried splicing two goggles together and having vision on both sides? Sounds like epic win to me... Iminna check the Target up the street for these. I'll report back in.

| | | I bought a pair last night with the intention of trying some Urbexin' with them and promptly returned them not two hours later (unused except in the Target parking lot) so as to not trip and die. They really do work, however to be useful (and safe) for exploring some changes need to be made. First, the camera is located in the middle of the wearer's forehead and a couple inches above the eyes. This makes for a spectacularly disorienting experience when movement is involved. Second, they ARE meant more for kids than adults so while the straps get plenty long the goggles themselves are pretty tight , especially with glasses. Third, the IR illuminator is pretty weak. The packaging's claim of 50ft range is the absolute limit of what will be visible. For the price the goggles are pretty nifty, but for IR kit I'll be going with a monocular-style unit that I can use much like a flashlight but stealthier. As-is these goggles are probably pretty dangerous for Urbexing. HOWEVER, with some modifications they'd be pretty bitchin! With some skill and patience, one could turn two of these units into a decent set of binocular goggles; the IR illuminator could be moved from the right eye to the forehead and a camera could be placed in front of each eye and to keep the weight reasonable a pair of 6.5v rechargeable battery packs (maybe ones meant for cordless phones?) could replace AA's. That done they'd be pretty snazzy! Just be careful if you try them as-is, they're a fun gadget but given the price you get what you pay for.

| | | Thanks for the review man! I was thinking about trying them out, but couldn't convince myself to do it, especially since I know I'd be chopping them apart to "improve" them... Maybe I'll wait till after xmas and see if anyone on ebay manages to break theirs... Would an IR modded flashlight help these out, or is the problem more in the camera than in the illumination?

| | | An IR modded torch would give you more visible range but the problem of the disorienting camera placement is, in my opinion, a bigger issue with these than illumination.

| | | came across this a while back
http://www.instruc...sion-Headset-Hack/ could be fun if you are a dyi nerd with some extra cash. from what i gather the image you get from them is compairable to the toy goggles and i have no idea if the led's are visible with the naked eye. however, being home made i would imagine you could get around the pesky peripheral vision problem by adding a second view finder or camera or both. haven't built one my self yet as the price for the camera needed alone makes it beyond my means at the moment.

| | | Has anyone ever thought about how unsafe night vision could possibly be? I mean, yes, they help one see in pitch black darkness. BUT, the fine line between being safe and being seen are real. With night vision you don't get any real depth perception so if you're climbing those sky high girders or shuffling in a drainage tunnel with debris everywhere then you're setting yourself up for trouble. Back when I was in the military we would have to practice 100% night discipline so during mock attacks we wouldn't be spotted as easily (in theory at least). While wearing NVG's one would trip, fall, bang, and otherwise be a drunken walking mess WHILE trying to be stealthy. Sooooo, enter the red filtered flashlight. Sure it was more noticeable at night BUT sine red doesn't travel as far it wasn't really a huge factor. Hell, a cigarette cherry light would travel further Granted it's better then nothing but I more likely recommend a red lighted LED or regular red filtered flashlight. Oh, and a whole slew of problems begins when you finally do decide to go with night vision. Are they binocular? Are you willing to give up your peripheral vision? Are they "cyclopian", meaning, your depth of vision is shot even more? PRICEY, hello drop! The list goes on and on. Hell, to fully solve those problems (minus those involving depth) you'll need Panoramic Night Vision Goggles, and even those are in the test phases right now. The cheapy Eyeclops from Target is a TOY, so don't expect much from it. Grab two red LED or red filtered LED torches, bootleg em onto a head harness and keep your vision 100%. ANd if you accidentally kill your investment you won't be out half as much as with the Eyeclops, or more with real night vision. Just my opinion though...
