Evidenced by the rather depressing blog posts on Abandoned of various demolitions, it is with great fanfare that the newest article of Abandoned deals with a closed hospital in southeast Ohio, and in an area where potential reuse has been attempted several times. Veterans Memorial Hospital in Meigs County has been shuttered since 2001, and although attempts to obtain federal dollars to renovate the building into a health clinic have failed four times, the county is still hopeful it can salvage the property for active uses. Heading further north to Weirton, West Virginia, it is with sadness that the city has demolished the historic Cove School. Closed in 1991, the property was declared historic by the Weirton Historic Landmarks Commission and the West Virginia Division of Culture and History. Of course, that matters little to a city struggling with decades of job losses and population declines, and any attempts to remove "blighted" properties, including ones that are in good condition and easily re-adaptable, are seen as net benefits.
