IDK - I've found some good stuff close in Iowa. There was a huge, rust bucket, factory in Algona until they bulldozed it a few years ago. Maytag in Newton was a real let down, the wind turbine people were moving in as Maytag was moving out. There are disused parts of the factory, but security is pretty thick. There's a lot of shut down elevators and the sort, even in smaller towns. Find your way onto some truly back roads and there are bound to be abandonments. One Flickr page I was looking at, a guy found an old courthouse out in a field with no towns for 15 miles around in central Iowa. There's a lot of cool shit in the country (even outside the stuff in small semi-ghost towns), it's just way more hidden then it is in urban areas, and often requires trips on B or C level service roads.
