Hey, I'm a long time lurker, just got around to signing up. I am in NW Iowa and haven't done much for exploring in the last 12-14 years. I just wanted to pop in and say hi, and I look forward to maybe exploring with some locals in the future.

Hey, I live in Iowa. Southeast portion of the state, in Des Moines cty. Ever explored any drains in Iowa City or Cedar Rapids?

"From down here, we can knock the whole wall down!"
"Duh, yeah, boss, but how do we get out?"

Iowa City drains are B-O-R-I-N-G.
Steam tunnels at the university are less boring.

Mt. Vernon has interesting-looking drains that would be easy enough to slip into, but I never had the chance.

Sorry, I probably forgot my <sarcasm> tags.

Hey all. I'm in Sioux City. I've never done any drains, I can't imagine them being too interesting around here. Yeah, I noticed that most of the Iowa explorers are pretty spread out....... bummer

There are lots of abandonments in the city, but 99% of them are sealed up really well. Some of them I would *really* like to get into Yup, lots of farmhouses though. I am really thinking about that Atlas missile site down by Omaha too.....

I will be heading out to Sioux City in early February to do some exploring for the day so I would be interested to hear what other abandonments there are besides The Warrior Hotel which I assume is being restored, and the other big one in town.

IDK - I've found some good stuff close in Iowa.

There was a huge, rust bucket, factory in Algona until they bulldozed it a few years ago.

Maytag in Newton was a real let down, the wind turbine people were moving in as Maytag was moving out. There are disused parts of the factory, but security is pretty thick.

In order to use your head, you have to go out of your mind.

Yeah you just have to know where to look. There's a lot of shut down elevators and the sort, even in smaller towns. Find your way onto some truly back roads and there are bound to be abandonments. One Flickr page I was looking at, a guy found an old courthouse out in a field with no towns for 15 miles around in central Iowa. There's a lot of cool shit in the country (even outside the stuff in small semi-ghost towns), it's just way more hidden then it is in urban areas, and often requires trips on B or C level service roads. No biggie.
