| | | The Nickel Range Hotel around 1940. The Canadian Bank of Commerce sits beside it.
The same location today. The site of the Nickel Range Hotel became the site for the Odeon Theatre in 1974 and after a few name changes in it's last few years standing, the building was demo'd in 2002 to make room for this breathtaking parking lot.. The Canadian Bank of Commerce building is now an over-priced men's clothing store.

| | | Hey, stop trying to steal Winnipeg's glory. We are in the process of demolishing yet another of our historic treasures, the Kelly House built in 1882, for another parking lot. /51% of downtown Winnipeg's land is parking.

| | | lol - you're just going to end up depressing us with pictures of old, beautiful buildings that Sudbury has destroyed over the years. Then we'll have no choice but to drown our sorrows in beer and wings...

All silliness on my part aside, it really is kind of a pet peeve of mine when it comes to Sudbury. We don't have a lot of historical buildings. This city is so utilitarian, as soon as a building has outlived its usefulness, it's gone. Regardless of its heritage or historical value.
Drive through so many Ontario towns and you will see beautiful old buildings, preserved and hept for their sheer historical value. Drive through Sudbury, you see nothing older than the stack itself.

One of my pet peeves about this city is that after destroying these historical sites, they have advertising campaigns for "downtown sudbury" and how great it is... really - what's so great about it? besides the hookers i mean.. Another thing I don't understand is how they claim that Ste. Anne des Pins parish is the oldest building in Sudbury. Sure the original building was built in 1883 when the town was founded - but it's been destroyed by fire & rebuilt how many times? It's not the same building anymore... C'mon Sudbury - let it go...

Actually, after numerous crackdowns under the Paris Street bridge, there aren't even hookers much anymore. There goes our last shot at greatness.

But what else do we have that's less pathetic? The largest nickel? The tallest polluter? Countless stretches of land that won't likely be fertile again for a few more 100 years? I think when you continue looking through those archive pictures, you're gonna cry.

| | | That being said, I think fivepointsix has created a rather fascinating thread. Perhaps others should post some historical pictures, coupled with pics of what that location currently looks like. I don't know about anyone else, but I love those.
