The one thing that's missing. (and it ain't huge pictures)

As far as I'm aware, at no point in time has anyone ever found an intact Padded Cell in a Scottish Asylum.

It's always been something I've wondered about... Did we never use them? Were they just removed before the explorers got there? What?

It's sorta been a back-burner mission of mine to find one.

We entered the hospital by day, recently closed and somewhat pristine we start in the main administration building.

The locked treatment areas.

It's clear we are not going to find a padded cell in the admin wing... But we did find some diagrams. There are 20 other buildings on site; and one looks promising.

Welcome to the secure unit!

The playground of no escape - 15ft walls.

First sign - all light fittings and windows are WAY out of reach.

And then we found what we were looking for!

Whoever scratched this into aircraft grade lexan with their NAILS may have been more than a little... Disturbed.

So wow, we found a padded cell.

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL... Because we also found a padded WARD!

An entire rubber ward. Holy. Fuck!

Unfortunately the TV's gone, but you can see where it was, bolted down and secure behind plexiglass.

As always, you can see more here:

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

That is amazing. Were there cameras or anything to keep an eye on the crazies?

There were - but by the time we got there only the brackets and some loose cabling remained!

The padding doesn't look very thick, does it?

4.5cm - sorta like a slightly thicker gym mat!

Also (as you can see) the spars are all exposed as well. It's my theory that there was maybe another seamless layer over the entire of the top that was removable, as there are push clips (like on a jacket) to clip 'something' else onto the wall.

We had a look around for a 'top coat' but couldn't find anything... Maybe it's been put to use in the other still active parts of this place?

Additionally, the floor had markings (clean spots) were it looks like maybe some type of padding has been removed.

Hmmm. I wonder what the point of the padding is. I mean there are still so many places, head height, to smash into. Also the toilet. Maybe the toilet had special, removable, padding?

Que pasa, baby?

Good find! Though I find it hilarious that they padded a whole room top to bottom but left this blunt stainless steel toilet exposed lol.

I climb stuff!

I think the Playground of No Escape fulfills the rubber room expectations quite nicely. Funny how every room is painted in shockingly stark contrast, like a serious acid trip gone bad. I wonder if the patients experienced these rooms with violent intensity.

That is the coolest thing! I thought that padded asylum rooms were just a cliche! The scratches on the window were awesome too.

Nice find for sure. I am surprised that they let people have nails long enough for scratching. Normally they make patients cut them so that they are not used as a weapon or for scratching their own eyes out.

A mirage is not an optical illusion. It is a real phenomenon, and one can take photographs of it. The interpretation of the image, however, is up to the fantasy of the human mind.

Yeah, we have a similar procedure here in the UK, come to think of it.

Could be that normally good patients were sent over to this ward for 'time out' ? Keeping in mind this is a large hospital with many wards.
