Abandoned House Film Set

Hey guys,

Here are some photos of an abandoned house set me and my Production Design team have been working on for the past two weeks. It's going to be used in a series of short films, 12 in total. We start shooting next week, so any suggestions/comments/criticism on the authenticity or general look of the set would be appreciated.

A couple of suggestions... lose a rung in that stairwell. Or loosen one at least... too perfect.

Also, the "discoloration" of the wall paint looks to deliberate, somehow. I dunno... something about screams fake to me.

Oh, and I agree with someone else's suggestion... more peeling. There's not much water damage or moisture or heat damage that would happen in an unmaintained building.

I'm no set designer... just my two cents. Otherwise, looking pretty cool.

Thanks a lot for the comments so far guys... there's no toilet in the set, the washroom and kitchen are basically small shoot off areas. We are however going to peel some paint next weekend, so hopefully that will give it the final realism effect. Also with lots of carefully placed lighting and 35mm film you wont really notice it in so much detail.. somewhat.

And the orbs!! I don't know how they got there, maybe some dust from all the spraying of that yellow shit we used to age it? Who knows.

I think, deep down, we all know where the orbs come from, whether we care to admit it or not.

But, yeah, kick the banister, making at least one post off kilter.

Ideally, the windows and doors would even be a little out of square, due to settling foundations. I know it's hard to not use your t-square when building, but this is the time to do it by hand, while drunk, and blindfolded.

I am for sure going to bust probably the third post up in the middle to kind of give it the "vandalized" look.. Thanks for the advice guys.

Only it troubles me because the railing and slats were my own contribution to our measly class budget haha

Actually, breaking it in the middle would be pretty artificial looking to me. I have seen that before, but it is much more common that someone would have just kicked at it while standing on the stairs, and the result would be that it would stay attached at the top, but get detached at the bottom, and be at an angle.

Having built quite a few sets, I would expect that you just used some little brad nails to stick it all together. Think about if it were real nails, 2 or three at each joint. Kicking out the bottom would possibly splinter the bottom of the piece a little, and the nails at the top would continue to hold steady, but now be bent, holding the post rather firmly, but at an angle. Basically, to get that effect with set building techniques, you'd probably have to hold it where you want it, and jam a bunch of little nails into it to get it to stay crooked.

If the alcohol bottles on the range are a part of the set and not props there for the moment, then there should prolly be a few more scattered about.
Also the caution tape seems a bit out of place.

It looks fabulous!! I love it...the only thing that I may suggest is to have a bit more junk and articles scattered around. Other than that it's awesome, kudos for making such a great set!

It all looks pretty good.

It boils down to how you are lighting and shooting it. If you sculpt some nice shadows it should be good to go. Have some nice texture that catch the light.

And thank god you are shooting on film. Shooting a bit under will bring out some nice grit and grain.

Interesting idea, trying to make a place look abandoned. I recommend getting sawdust and piling it along the walls. Also, the couch needs stains, and possibly fewer cushions and legs. The sink looks good, but it looks like my sink at home; you need to make the layer of gunk thicker.

oh... and the skeleton of a small animal would be a nice touch too. Rat, pigeon, chihuahua... something equally useless and distasteful.

wow, thanks a lot for the comments guys. I am going to be in there all this weekend fully dressing the set, so we will really dirty up all the furniture and make it look a lot more cluttered.. Than shooting starts on Monday!

I'll post pics sometime this weekend after most of the dressing is done.

The individual film I am designing calls for the living room to look as if someone has set up a painting studio in this abandoned house.. why someone would do this, I don't know. Well, I guess lots of photographers shoot models in abandonments, not much different. I should probably start another thread to see if anyone has come across an abandoned art studio in their travels.
