A few pics from today (Pickering, Aurora, Markham, Newmarket) (50+ pics, 56k take a break)

Hey all,

Well this morning since I was awaken kind of early, I decided to go out and check out a few well known sites but I only wanted to go to houses or stuff of that sort, nothing industrial.

1st place I went to was the Aurora houses/farm that a previous member just posted pics of. This place was cool but nothing special.

HDR

2nd place was the Pickering Mansion. I got there and everybody who drove by slowed down to a crawl when they saw me. I did a quick walk around and saw everything was boarded up properly and there was no way in without breaking something. I also noticed an extension cord running into the mansion from the neighbors house. After I saw that I left quickly.

HDR

3rd place was a Cathedral and it was awesome. I have seen it for 24 years but I never once got this close to it. Was pretty awesome.

HDR

4th place was just a house I drive by almost daily. I stopped to take a look but its right onside of a major road and the only way in was very visible so I never tried.

No HDR sorry

Comments?

Thanks all and thanks for waiting for the pics to load!

That's awesome that you went to the Aurora grouping, it's so funny to see someone else having pictures of the same place I spent a few days in. It's also weird seeing all the slight differences like the chunks missing from the walls that were never damaged before. Kind of sad.

And that's really sketchy about the Pickering Mansion...makes me glad that I didn't try and get in there when I went to visit at night! I wonder how whoever is living in there gets in and out (if there is actually someone living there.) When I went to look the huge propane tank also freaked me out a bit...and the cathedral..I drive by that so often as well and had no idea that it was abandoned!!

Great pics, thanks for the very interesting post!

Man I love your HDR shots, they are very tastefully done. The last locations cool, to bad you couldn't get into that mansion!

that is a lot of pics

that cathedral isn't Abandoned btw

I have talked to the main Architect who designed it and He also designed the community around it and has been to the Vatican and all kinds of places around the world. The Church was built for Pope John Paul when he visited Canada a decade ago and holds service as far as I know..

nice..

Hey all

With abandoned places, I think they change daily. It all depends on who knows about them and what type of people visit. Its sad that people destroy the stuff as somebody in the world is out money unless its just going to be demoed.
The Aurora houses weren't in that bad of a condition I find, very little damaged compared to other places I have been.

The mansion, I don't think anybody lives there but I think somebody bought the place (for very cheap) and is trying to keep people out as they are going to rebuild it. The extension cord running from the neighbor I think is for an alarm or maybe its just to cut the newly cut wood they are covering every opening with. Sad to see such an expensive place destroyed. I would love to see the inside but I am sure it would also be depressing.

As for the cathedral. They don't have service and haven't in a few year from what I know. I talked to a old guy who was there who said he helped build it and went to church in the 80's as he was Slovak. He said it hasn't been running for many years. When looking inside, it shows work being done but you also see a flooded basement and everything is dusty even the tools. While it might not be abandoned, for sure nobody visits there regularly. I did find a possible way in to check it out more so maybe I go back one day. I will see.

As for the HDR image of the place, I love it. Bt far the best work I have done imo. I drove around inside my car for like 30 min taking photos for the HDR purpose but as soon as I saw this one, I know it was going to be the best one.

Here is a sample of other one just different angles:

Thanks

Slovak-Byzantine Catholic Cathedral

As for the Pickering Mansion, that place has some serious mold issues. Whoever takes control of the place will have a lot of repairs ahead of them...

You must have missed the mansion by a week! We dropped by there last weekend and there was one window that was still open.

Someone's doing work on the place -- but in a somewhat backward order. After stepping in and cutting through the kitchen, with it's cracked granite counter tops and splintered cabinet doors, we found evidence of repairs in the grand living room. A portable workbench is set up at the bottom of the staircase, and on it... glue, clamps and some wood mouldings.

Some of the rooms have been freshly painted -- one of the rooms smelled so fresh of latex, it had to have been painted earlier that day. Yet adjacent rooms still had holes in the drywall, and mould on the walls.

I was surprised to see the priority sequence. You would think that you wouldn't start and finish one room at a time, but rather begin with sealing the house properly, replacing the many broken windows, and establishing a functional door -- the workers, too, were using the unboarded window as their entry point! And only then begin to paint and do finishings once you've got the place weather-tight.

It'll be interesting to see how the place turns out. Oh, the power cord through the window, at least as of a week ago, was connected to nothing but a power-bar and an electric drill on the inside.

wow.
I'm glad to see that someone is actually fixing that place up. The level of petty vandalism was ridiculous. When I went a lot of the railings had been broken off and thrown into the walls

there was also moldy vomit in the jacuzzi

it also looked like ALL of the internal wiring had been clipped and stolen by scrappers....

And just like fedge said, there was also a lot of mold. Whoever left this place to rot is certainly going to have their hands full getting it back to livable condition, but at least it isn't SO far gone that its impossible. I wish them the best of luck.

as far as your set cereal....the only HDR I really like is the one of the cathedral (which turned out really nice), the rest all seem to be
over saturated....are you using photomatix to render the HDRs?
I love the shot of the halfpipe inside the barn...looks really sketchy considering there appears to be a wooden structural pillar rising up through one side of the transition...
good work man keep it up

Maybe a production company is fixing up that mansion for an upcoming film? Sounds like only the rooms that might be used in filming are being repaired. I've seen it happen before.

OMG that mansion is so nice inside and look what people do. I would love to buy that house and fix it up but it seems kind of far gone or way too much money needs to be invested.

As for my HDR's, yeah I don't like the other two but the Cathedral ones turned out to be really good. When I saw the after product, I was shocked. First I used Photomtarix and then I ran it through photoshop and added some warming filters and toned down the blue and upped the contract even more. I love the way the 1st one I posted turned out. It finally shows after a few months of learning as much as I can about photography, it's getting better. All I need to learn now is better composition.

Well I went back to the Cathedral last night and was there for like 5 minutes when some BMW pulled in and sat right infront of the church. I waited for 1 hour for the car to leave but it never did, so I walked back to my car parked in a close by street. Maybe next weekend, I go back

Totally possible, seen it done. But I've also seen inexperienced contractors working in bad order..

EDIT - Just researching around.. I found some dude shot a video of the place before it was even boarded up.. Damn that main room looks HUGE!

Wow nice vid. I wish I was able to get in there. Looks so nice and it looks like people just got up and left.

Anybody know the story behind it?

Really? I was there on Saturday around midday. It was nice out and I saw nobody else except construction guys across the road doing their work shaking the whole house while I was in it.

I just checked out your blog and I saw that dead bird and was going to take a pic but I didn't want it to be tradition for me to find dead animals everywhere I go as I have found dead animals at the last 3 places I went.

The one house was pretty big and it seemed nice for the time. I wonder why they never sold the property as it is on prime land now. I would love to live there with a newer house obviously

Yeah I also saw a dead cat at another location a few days earlier but it was in skeleton form.

I did notice tons of wells but I assumed maybe they ran dry to new ones had to be drilled. Maybe some new corporation purchased the property and are doing something.

None the less it was a cool place.
