This just in. Sorry, my source didn't provide a source -- I'll give credit where due when I get it.

Smoke billowed today from the top of the Midland Savings Bank building in downtown Midland. The bank, seen here in an undated file photo, was scheduled for demolition in November. (Photo by Alec Richards)
The cause of the smoke is unknown. The building was scheduled for implosion Nov. 8.

BREAKING NEWS - Heavy smoke is seen emerging from the rooftop of Midland Savings Building downtown.

The smoke was caused when a spark from a utility torch hit debris in an elevator shaft, City Fire Marshal David Hickman said

The torch was being used to separate Rebar in advance of the building's Nov. 8 demolition.

Glass from the building is reportedly falling eight to 10 stories onto the street below. Nearby areas have been roped off to prevent injuries. The Midland County Courthouse next door has been evacuated and closed for the day.

Workers from throughout downtown have gathered outside their buildings to watch the smoke.

Reporters and photographers are on scene. Please check back with MyWestTexas.com soon for further updates.

I would expect that the implosion, which has already had "several delays", will likely not be carried out as scheduled -- the fire will weaken structural elements, and it might tip sideways instead of pancaking. Not sure if that will open up any additional exploration opportunities, since I don't know the area. Seeing how the county courthouse is "next door", I doubt it's a particularly tempting target. But if you *were* making any pre-demo plans, make adjustments for crumbling, smouldering floors.

It's a shame it's gone. I had been in there about a year and a half ago and only went on about two floors. Many of the businesses there had left tons of promotional items, pens, keychains etc... The downstairs cafeteria was eery in that it felt like everyone packed up and left one day. Dishes were still in the sink, and giant industrial cooking equipment was just sort of left to rot.

Before I ever got the chance to go back in they had started gutting it out for scrap which is how the fire got started. The buildings here in Midland are starting to dwindle fast.
