17 fires since June (Sudbury)

A recent rash of fires in the city have caused concern for many residents.

On Monday evening, the Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS), along with the Greater Sudbury Fire Service, and the Ontario Fire Marshall's Office, held a public forum at Sudbury Secondary to inform the citizens about the suspicious fires.

More than 60 residents came to listen to what was being done about the fires and how the investigations were proceeding.

Since the beginning of June, 17 suspicious fires have been reported in the city, many of which were in the Donovan, Flour Mill and downtown core of the city.

Police said reports of suspicious fires have been escalating over the past two years, beginning in April 2006, from what they call nuisance fires — relatively small in nature, like NIM bins, garbage cans and blue boxes — to the more recent serious structural fires, including the Steelworkers Hall on Frood Road and an old warehouse on Isabel Street.

“The purpose of this evening is two-fold,” said GSPS Deputy Chief Frank Elsner.

“We've been very busy in the last month working on the various fires within our city and we are really in need of our community's support. We are looking for anybody that can help us with leads or any information that is possibly out there.”

“We're looking for co-operation but we're also looking to alleviate fears,” added Inspector Robert Keetch, who is in charge of the criminal investigation division at the GSPS. “We know the tremendous impact these fires have on a neighbourhood and on the community.

“We want to identify the situation to you and and identify some of the steps we're taking as a police organization to minimize the risk associated with these incidents.”

The investigation so far into the fires has lead police to believe “that the person(s) responsible for many of the fires in the areas of concern, live right in that area,” Elsner said. “Somebody knows something out there and we're appealing to the public.”

Not the first time for this area. Perhaps a little larger in scope, in terms of the targets being chosen. Remember Copper Cliff?

We have the same thing going on in Niagara right now. 11 was the last count of suspicious fires, all deemed arson. All abandoned buildings and houses.

Crime Stoppers of Niagara is seeking assistance in identifying the person or persons responsible for numerous incidents of arson in Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the- Lake.
Since Aug. 1, Niagara Regional Police have assisted in the investigation of a number of suspicious fires and 10 of those fires have been deemed to be arson. To date, no arrests have been made.
The most recent intentionally set fire happened at a construction site at 2634 St. Paul Ave. in the north end of Niagara Falls on Oct. 14.
The building was unoccupied and sustained $10,000 in damages.
The following nine other fires are under investigation: Oct. 13, Townline Road and Line 8 Road, Niagara-on-the-Lake, where a pile of debris was set on fire in a wooded area surrounding a vineyard; Oct. 8, 2nd Avenue, Niagara Falls, a house was destroyed by a fire set in the basement; Oct. 4 at 5450 Kitchener St., Niagara Falls, a number of separate fires were set at the unoccupied Survivor Inn; Sept. 30 at 6849 Calaguiro Dr., Niagara Falls, a fire was set on a home under construction in its basement; Sept. 29 at Townline Road and Line 8 Road, Niagara-on-the- Lake, piles of cut brush set on fire; Sept. 2 at 4128 Victoria Ave., Niagara Falls, a vacant house had a small fire set in basement; Aug. 28 a fire was set at 4823 St. Lawrence Ave., Niagara Falls; Aug. 18, 504 Queenston Rd., Niagara-on-the-Lake, a fire destroyed a small garage; and Aug. 1 at 6455 Fallsview Ave., Niagara Falls, two separate fires were set on the third and 10th floor hallways of the Fallsview Crown Hotel.
People with information are asked to contact police at 905-735-7811.
To leave an anonymous tip, call Crime Stoppers at 1-8000-222-TIPS or at www.crimestoppersofniagara.comor through texting CRIMES (274637) with the text message reading tip309 and then the message.

fucking arsonists....kinda glad Im not doing much exploring in those areas right about now....although Im sure a large camera, tripod & lack of gasoline, matches & a crazy look in your eyes would be fairly decent credibility props if approached by the authorities or a concerned citizen....then again, its just one more thing to worry about. Hopefully they catch the crazy prick who's doing this...

Niagara has an arsonist(s) running around now and over the past couple years there has been one or more of them hitting Port Colborne, Thorold and St. Catharines. A couple of the places hit in Port Colborne were not empty and residents lost all of their stuff. Thankfully no one has been seriously injured or killed.

It makes me reconsider carrying a spare gas can in my trunk, just in case I'm ever stopped on private property. I really do wonder if there is some relation between posting these sites (not only on UER) and the arsons.

I suspect though, it's just bored kids who already know about these locations.

For the record, and I am NOT asking for a flame war here. But I am sick of being told there is NO WAY that it could be someone on UER, because that is just BS and there is no way of knowing. And if it's not someone on UER, then it could be a friend of a friend.

The following places I have posted in the UEDB have been victims of Arson:
http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=25687
http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=24850
http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=27479

And of course who could forget the following. This place sat practically untouched for 4 years. Not even a week after being posted in the DB it was trashed to the point it's not even fun to take pics there anymore.
http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=26680

The powers that be can argue with me as much as they want, but I am seeing a trend. As we know not everyone on this site is who they say they are. And not everyone just because they have FM status can be trusted.
Again, I am not saying it's specific members from this site. But who is to say members didn't bring a friend. That friend told a friend, hence that friend brought a gang of people to said location to tag it, wreck it for no reason or burn it down.

It's been going on for awhile. I was questioned when I lived in Port Colborne because I drove a car that was similar to one seen driving away from a building that had been arsonized. Thankfully I was at work at the time!!

Kitchener & Guelph have the same problem. Over the last 3 years a lot of abandon buildings were torched.... and in the last 2 years in Kitchener back porches, sheds and garages have been the target.

Scary... very scary

90% of these cases get solved by young kids admitting they had nothing better to do during weekends.

I really hope the places being torched in the Niagara area aren't a result of them being posted on various sites. I am sure there are people on all sites who are up to no good though. I hope it's just bored kids, or an arsonist(s) who looks around before deciding what to torch.
There was a volunteer fireighter who torched a place in Port Colborne (years ago)and the worst part about it was that he torched a place right behind where he was living at the time. Turns out he was a serial torcher that was doing buildings in Niagara and beyond. I always wondered why he was trying to get into photos when I was at fire scenes. Also explained why he showed up really quick to scenes at times.

I say when they catch those kids there should be a big bonfire with all their possessions in it. Eye for an eye.

I'm sure some of us were pyros way back when.. but I'm sure none of us lit entire buildings on fire!!!!

I still think we should conduct an experiment to test the cause=effect relation of UER and the subsequent vandalisms/arsons. Let's select a low importance undiscovered site then post it on UER. Then count how long it takes to get "hit".

Story from Sudbury Star. They have video of a press conference on the site, but that will go away in the next day or so, so I didn't link it

ANGELA SCAPPATURA, THE SUDBURY STAR

Greater Sudbury police have charged two 12-year-old boys with arson in connection with the September fire that destroyed the Steelworkers Hall.
The pair, who can't be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, may face more arson charges as the investigation continues.
"We are trying to determine if they are responsible for other fires," said Greater Sudbury Police Chief, Ian Davidson. "We think that they are."
Police provided little information about what led to the arrest, but said their investigation heated up late Thursday night.
One of the suspects was arrested Saturday; the second was taken into custody Monday morning.
Both are residents of the downtown/west end area of the city.
For local unions affected by the fire, the arrests have "hit like a tonne of bricks."
Local 6500 president John Fera sat at his desk, dazed, trying to make sense of his emotions.
"It's really difficult to know how you feel about this. It's almost like there is no closure there," he said, just minutes after he was told of the arrests.
"I'm glad they've arrested someone; I'm not glad it's 12-year-old boys."
Union workers who lingered near the lobby of the Steelworkers temporary office were also stunned by the age of the suspects.
"It's shocking that two 12- year-old boys could do something so disastrous," said Rick Bertrand, chief steward of mines for the local 6500.
The boys have been charged with arson and possession of an incendiary device.
Police are considering more charges, including robbery and possession of stolen property, but Chief Davidson said their delicate age is a consideration.
The two suspects recently turned 12 and, under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, just meet the minimum age a young offender can be charged.
"The likelihood of having a serious sentencing in these circumstances is questionable," said Davidson. "Then you have to question the validity of a long sentence for someone so young in the first place."
John Rimore, executive director of the John Howard Society in Sudbury, said a harsh sentence is not the solution to what he believes are "extremely troubled" children.
Rimore has worked with youth charged with arson and said, in his experience, acts of arson indicate deep-rooted problems.
"Arson and animal cruelty are the two really serious problems that show there are some very extremely serious problems going on in that youth," he said.
"What they need is serious, ongoing, long-term clinical counseling usually by people who have extensive training."
There have been more than 30 suspicious fires in the city of Sudbury since the beginning of 2008.
In addition to the Steelworkers Hall, two other large buildings have been decimated by fire: an apartment building on Mitchell Street and a warehouse on Isabel Street near Lorne.
Police said the Steelworkers fire started at the back of the building in the basement.
They would not confirm reports the blaze began after an accelerant was poured into a vent and lit.
Richard Waugh, head of the Greater Sudbury Police Arson task force, said he's optimistic more arrests in connection with other fires will take place.
"It's gratifying to know this case has been resolved, but there is never a happy ending," he said.

I always liked these examples from Oakville related to this topic.

Location 1. Hydro Operations building. Abandoned, cars often parked outside for unrelated reasons, little to no vandalism except for some prior police training. Easy to access. It was eventually vandalized, I think? Shortly before it was demolished.

Location 2. Just across the street the Oakville Lifecare Centre. Owners boarded the windows, within weeks the walls were tagged. And mere days after security was dropped the building was heavily scrapped and vandalized. Easy to access, well, after the vandals had their way with it.

Location 1 had been in the database long before location 2. Location 2 however was clearly abandoned. The fact that they were across the street from one another amused me the most.

Here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you.
