| | Smiths Falls Bunker < on 10/15/2008 8:33 AM >
| | | A buddy and myself explored the old communications bunker in Smiths Falls a couple of weeks ago. In case anybody doesn't already know, it was one of the communications/decoy bunkers set up to protect the Deifenbunker. This has had it's entrances filled in, but none the less provided for a neat trip. The Bunker...
That concrete "curb" looking thing is actually the TOP of one of the entrances to the blast way!!
Ventilation Shafts
Okay, this place was decommissioned in '93/'94, and these bolts looked as if they were just put on!! No discolouration whatsoever!! In case your wondering, this is a mount for one of the comm towers.
Various shots...
And this little mystery, i need a little help with. We aren't sure what it is! Best guess is that it was a fibreglass dome of some sort. There is an electrical outlet inside of it, but no real mounting points for a Sat Dish or Array. So...what is it???
Hopefully this isn't in the database ( I can't see the full database yet!), if it isn't maybe someone can put it in there for me?!? [last edit 10/15/2008 8:36 AM by chromehorse - edited 1 times]

| | | I doubt it is a "decoy", rather a communications outpost. There is another in Edenvale that served as a comm outpost for the bunker at Base Borden.

| | | I have toured the Diefenbunker...plan to again and take the backroad tour. Yes the small sites were comm sites, but they were set up away from the Carp site for a reason. If the enemy tracked our communications, they would of pinpointed and bombed these smaller sites and not the main bunker, hence why these are also considered decoy sites. This info actually came from the tour and verified by a Military historian.

| | | Hell, i don't think it needs to be blasted!! The gov't just used sand to fill in the entrance. Hell the cows have actually starting digging in it!!! Anybody have any clues as to the fibreglass "ruins" pictured above??

| | | This might be one of the transmitter sites for the Deifenbunker. It was connected by wire to the Deifenbunker. CFS Carp would not transmit from CFS Carp to avoid direction finding equipment to give away its location. One of the other transmitter sites is in the DB already, the Burntlands site in Almonte. Famous for some loonies thinking that they saw UFO's over and around the site. There is still an active 'secret' government communications facility in Smiths Falls. It is guarded by a Commissionaire in a guard shack. Look for it off Ruthven at Roger Stevens. [last edit 1/25/2009 6:41 PM by Mutt - edited 1 times]

| | | Yes, this is a transmitter site. I have pictures of some of the tower mounts. Does anyone have any aerial photographs of this site before it got decommissioned? My resource with the military is coming up with nothing so far!!
