The Masonic Temple

Hi from toronto canada. Discovered this site quite by accident as I was searching for some information on The Masonic Temple (yonge/davenport) . My great-grandfather's construction company he owned actually built the temple which i find fascinating. It's in our binder of buildings and houses he built around toronto. while i've never been there, the tour i read on this site sounded cool. thats about the only thing i can really contribute. Been curious and have toured through abandoned houses and nosed my way around in odd places around the city/countryside. can't say as i'm half as dedicated as the other members on here by the sounds of it. probably will have a rash of 'interesting' comments. just thought it was a bit of a connection to the site that people had explored a building my family built.

That's very cool! Do you have any old pictures of it when it was being constructed/brand new? I'm sure we'd love to see them! (As I would personally even).

Welcome to the site!

I wish I did have some pictures. I only found out about it just in the last year or so that he had constructed it. The only picture I have is after it was constructed in our binder with the other buildings around Toronto. I just recently found out at work that a fellow I work with, his Grandfather had done some masonry work on it during the construction. He joked saying that my great-grandfather probably 'enslaved' him on the project. small world.

I managed to get inside the big Masonic Temple in Vancouver (BC Canada) with a couple friends, in 2002. I used to walk past it all the time and wondered at what kind of 4-story concrete structure has NO WINDOWS, except on the top floor?!?

One night, we walked around, checking all the doors, and the rear door was left open. Spent a good 2-3 hours wandering around and checking things out. Pretty creepy stuff.

The best part was eventually realizing there was a big banquet going on on the top floor. My friends stayed downstairs while I crept up the stairwell and watched the party for a while.

Eventually we left, and closed the door behind us, so they wouldn't notice (and hopefully make the same mistake of leaving it open in the future.)

I am a Scottish Rite Freemason and Shriner. If anyone in Dallas wants to check out any of the Masonic Temples or Cathedral, just let me know.

I've always wanted to see what was in my town's masonic lodge. It's one of the older buildings downtown, and you can tell it used to have windows because the parts where they were are cleverly stuccoed. It's still in use, so I'm weary of what would happen if I get caught in there.

You could stop by one day and ask to have a tour. Masons are rather proud of their buildings and usually have no problem giving anyone who asks a tour of it. At least around my area they are.

Masonic Temples and other old fraternal halls can be very interesting places to visit. Many where set up in a manner to emulate Egyptian temples. Seeing them in a state of decay is amazing. There are tons of these around. Many are totally abandoned or very very seldom used as their memberships have dwindled and gotten old. Many are quite small and for the most part they are hard to find but well worth the effort.

I stumbled on this thread by accident . I actually explored the Arabia Shrine Temple in Houston . It's a huge building with tons of private rooms with bars and dance floors. Most of the rooms had different themes . I really enjoyed the building and found a bunch of historic pics and other items. I was surprised they would leave such things.

I wonder how many people would believe someone if they told them people with cameras and a weird hobby would come and take pictures of their stuff, but not steal it....

I am also surprised by some people's "trash", even when the place is left to rot or fall down/get demolished.
