When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store.

Now that's one hell of a trip. I'd love to go there some day. It sounds like there are various options for tour guides there which would be my main concern - which one is most legit.

I found the website of the company I believe that author used.

http://www.tourkiev.com/chernobyl.php

They have photos to peruse too.

It's 2008 and you still find it necessary to warn dial-up users...

Anyway, nice pics, but when the buildings start to crumble in a couple of years these pictures will become, at least for me, more interesting...

Panic and terror? My understanding of it was that the people weren't really aware of what was going on. They when up to the railway bridge just outside Pripyat to get a good view of the blaze and no one really stopped them. They were told it was only a small electrical fire and that day, everyone went about their normal lives in Pripyat until they were all evacuated the next day. Buses were brought in from cities like Kiev and moved the entire population of the area in a matter of hours and the next day, the buses were back on thier normal routes until the truth came out and they were removed to be properly cleaned. It took pretty much 2 weeks for the Soviet Union to come out and admit in a public address that this was a serious issue to affect the Soviet Union and not just a small electrical fire at a power plant just a little south of Belarus.

nuclear is no good!!!

Nuclear power is better than fossil fuels such as coal and oil since there's no CO2 emissions. Modern reactors are also quite safe to operate, and with the current fail-safes the possibility of another chernobylish accident is near zero.

There are plenty of C02 emissions from nuclear power. The nuclear power plants themselves take anywhere from 12 to 18 years to build and that takes a lot of huge construction trucks and loads of materials. Then, The nuclear fuel itself must be mined, processed and then transported to the plant. Last, the highly radioactive nuclear waste must be transported to a storage facility. Nuclear power results in more CO2 emissions than wind or solar.

interest in exploration led to my flashlight obsession

True, but you can't power a city with only wind/solar power.

Wind and solar is good for rural community or as a complement to another energy source.

At least they don't result in radioactive waste. We have thousands of tones of the stuff left over from nuclear power plants.

Isn't the waste product often 'recycled'? Up here it was taken to BNFL Sellafield after being used up in the powerplants. Don't the military use depleted uranium in some tank ammo?

Either way, Chernobyl happened because some people decided to operate out of procedure. Procedures are there to be followed so accidents don't happen.
