In the Dallas Morning News Crime Blog today, a lesson in what NOT to do while exploring:

Police investigate target practice inside vacant Dallas building
1:22 PM Tue, Sep 30, 2008
Matthew Peterson

Reports of gunfire inside a vacant building this morning brought Dallas police to the 1600 block of [Redacted St], just south of downtown, reports staff writer Richard Abshire.

Inside they found a man who said he was doing target practice and had permission to be in the building.

It seems less likely that he had permission to fire a weapon inside city limits. Still, police did not plan to file charges against the man.

By 1 p.m., police had secured the building, near [Woodncha Liketano] Elementary School.

There were no injuries reported.

Yeah, I'd have to describe that as weird as well. Ok so it was a guy shooting for target practice in an abandoned building near a school... right? Right. And he had permission? From who?

Sorry.....
I told him it would be OK.
I thought it would be funny.
It was!

I know for a fact that the man had his proper DEA permits. There should have been no problems.

Wow... I can't believe no charges were filed... ?? I guess the next time I get caught trespassing I'll just say that I came to do some target practice, but forgot my gun at home.

I'd buy that in Texas. It Wisconsin there would have been SWAT called from neighboring cities as well to get in on the action. No shit we had a half dozen cops with shotguns and rifles running down the street past my work because someone had a BB gun he bought at the pawn shop. He was walking down the street and some shit calls the cops. They freak because this is the most action they have ever had. That's fucked up. Lucky he didn't get shot by some rookie.
