Missile Silos

Does anyone know of any missile silos in the northeast? I'm from the Lowell, MA area, and any silo that's closer is obviously better, but I would definitely be willing to travel a long time to explore such a site.

Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.

There are/were 12 (and a rumored 13th in Lake Placid) Atlas missile sites in Clinton and Essex counties of northeastern NY. All that I know of are either flooded, privately owned and being redeveloped, or being used by district highway departments. None of these, however, still contain missiles or are readily accessible.

Nike Ajax site B-63 is in Needham, MA on the Needham/Natick line. Not really a 'silo' per se and fill (dirt/rock/rubble) has been dumped there since '04 I believe. There wasn't much to see there to begin with. Google will turn up hits on B-63 and the other sites in the NY, NJ, NE area. Nothing like the Midwest though.

However, if you want to see a big-ass radar establishment I believe Moscow, Maine (someone correct me if I am wrong) holds quite the OTH-B radar field (extinct) used during the cold war. I'm not even sure if the structures are still intact.

If you have Google Earth, and I think every explorer should, go to the Google Earth Communities, under the Military section. There are a number of location collections of missile sites by category. All you need to do is download the file and open it with Google Earth and they're all plotted out for you.

As an example, maybe a list of Nike sites? http://bbs.keyhole...an/0/page/0#438212

I live in Essex County NY... I know where most of these silos are. Hell, there are a couple for sale, one finished into a house, the other being finished into a dance club.

Google "Atlas Missiles, NY, 380th Bomb Wing"
or go here...

the silos closest to Lake Champlain are flooded, but the buildings above them are still standing.

There are a couple of defense batteries in the Buffalo area, but they're magazines, not silos.

You know, people said the same thing about the Atlas F's in Kansas and we went out anyways and found some pretty great sites, one with a cradle intact. What i'd say is to look for yourself. Any Atlas site will be on private land as when they got decommissioned they sold the land off for practically nothing so all the sites got bought up fast. Just go for it, going to see for yourself is half the battle.

That page alone verifies the possibility not only of a non flooded silo, but one that at least had a partial cradle intact. Most flooding pics come from the initial descent into the silo, one of my groups put on boots and waded through the initial flooding, which only occurred between the first stairs through the series of blast doors but ended once the stairs to the command center started.

There are plenty of sites around . . depends what you're looking for there's one over in wayland, ma (not too far from lowell). Never been, but I've seen pics. I assume it's locked . . and picking/cutting the lock would be a crime.

There's one in Weymouth, I've been in No Joke. There are rats and snakes in there. Rats the size of House cats. And Chupacabras, it was utterly terrifying. If you go there, i recommend bringin a goat (For Chupi to eat, that's his name. We chill out all the time, Drink 40z on the street corner and pick up highschool girls) and a .22 for the rats.

we weren't talking about Nike sites.
