Welcome to the Beautiful Abandoned Lake of the Ozarks

Hey, everybody. I'd like to introduce myself, as I haven't posted much here. I go by The Gemini online, even though here, I'm Judy. I've been a member of UER since 2004 and am a devoted visitor. This is without a doubt THE comprehensive UE site on the web, hands down.

Today, I'd like to take you on a tour of the deck of the Captain Larry Don at Casino Pier at the BEAUTIFUL abandoned Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri

Well, my understanding is the individuals who were leasing the boat and the dock let their lease go (per eviction notice) and just basically abandoned it. The commander (the steamboat in one of the pics) is part of casino pier, but is not abandoned, as it is on a separate lease. It's now a bar and redneck dance club, and I don't think it disembarks anymore. A water patrol boat was passing by and checking me out while I was on the deck, or I would have climbed aboard. Given the fact that the whole place was condemned, I probably would have gotten a nice fine for being on the boat.

Right now, the main entrance area is "blocked off" (orange construction mesh) and the main entrance is awaiting demolition. I've been told that the captain larry don is up for grabs, if anyone's interested in procuring a relic from the golden age of dinner cruises.

Another interesting little tidbit - the restaurant was open in the summer of 2006. I'm reminded of Mouth from The Goonies, "This place is a summer restaurant? It looks like it hasn't been opened for ten summers."

The Lake of the Ozarks is goregeous, but it's dying. Abandoned tourist traps litter the landscape. Bagnell Dam created it, and waning tourists and a sinking economy are destroying it. I'm going back out there in the next month and I'm going to get a ton of pictures, don't worry.

The Lake of the Ozarks is the heart of central Missouri, and central Missouri is just peppered with awesome locations. I've moved to Springfield in SW Missouri, I've been here for a month, and there's just not a lot here. In Springfield, the historical is preserved, in Central Missouri, the historical decays, largely due to lack of funding and lack of interest by locals who are more interested in bringing in "rich city folk" and building $250,000 condos that sit empty nine months out of the year. Both places have their good points, I suppose.
