| | | Hey everybody I'm new to urban exploring but the times I've done it I've loved it. Now the only problem is that most of the abandonments close to where I'm located are in the middle of the worst areas of chicago. So really what Im asking is there a good chance of us (a couple of white kids) having problems with the people who live in these areas before we even get to our ue destination?

| | | It's your area, so you probably know the answer better than anyone Are you after specific advice, or just some moral support? (and there's nothing wrong with that).

| | | Of course there is. You also run a risk of bad things happening when you go the grocery store, mall, movie theater, or put gas in your car. You have to decide if it's worth the risk or not.

| | | you have to make the call yourself....there is the same element of risk in all cities in the world...some places are best left alone unless you have company and are aure of your surrounds. is the location really worth it ? most cases there is something just as good elsewhere with half the risk.

| | | Well, on the moral support front, rest assured that everyone gets the jitters and has to work through it. By the same token, there's no shame in giving something a miss if it's just plain foolish.

| | | As a general rule, one weird/creepy/scary thing happens every time I go exploring in Denver, and that's nowhere near as bad as Chicago. One time a guy tried to steal my friend's camera. Another time we witnessed a guy trying to steal stuff from a car in front of a building we were going to explore (we ended up calling the cops instead of exploring). With that in mind, you probably want to stay far, far away from the bad parts of Chicago. If there's a high probability of squatters, and a high probability of people being armed, you should probably take the hint and go elsewhere. Nothing ruins a good night's fun like getting mugged, or worse. Exploring there is just asking for trouble. I suggest you try to find some friendlier locations.

| | | "Live to explore another day." Hatsumi and Metawaffle nailed it. If it doesn't feel right, move along and try again another day. The more you do this sort of thing your instincts and confidence will change. As far as the area you're in, if you are already on point and aware of your surroundings, you should be able to avoid any trouble -from authority or from the streets.

| | | it would not be surprising if you came across some nasty stuff, but that's all part of ue. Get used to it, it's not a safe hobby

| | | UE is never really safe, so pick your battles. Some places will be worth the risk, others won't. What kind of abandonments are you looking to explore in Chicago, chumpster? Houses? Apartment buildings? Factories?

| | | I explore with chumpster!!!!!! and I honestly have never really felt extremely scared going into abandonments in bad neighborhoods...then I got my Rebel XT. thats the thing that scares me. EDIT: I'd be lying if I said i wasn't scared at all. [last edit 9/17/2008 3:36 AM by Dr. Sneeze - edited 1 times]

| | | Bad neighborhood abandonments usually equal bad people inside it at maybe the time you go in too. I would recomend draining in chicago, even though i have no experience in that city draining wise i just think being a large city it would be pretty sweet.

I think both African American explorers should chime in on how they feel about exploring in rough areas.

are you saying there's only 2???

That's my estimate on how many there are. There might be an entire group of African American Urban Explorers, but in my experience this is a hobby for middle and upper middle class white kids.

| | | Best advice for exploring in the Chi: Stay the hell out of Englewood. In fact anytime you're in Chicago for any reason stay out of englewood. Most of englewood is abandoned (or at least looks like it) but it's just not worth it. Only been there twice once I was almost mugged and the other time I was almost carjacked.

| | | lol exploring...safe...that's a good one. It's never safe. It's just a matter of how dangerous. Play it right and you will be fine with the locals though : ) I'm a little white blonde girl and I come outta places like detroit unscathed. So far..heh ; )
