Well, I made a successful trip down there and made a startling discovery.

Perhaps this explains why everyone has had such difficulty getting in, and why certain individuals who claimed to have been there have suddenly fallen silent -- AS IF THEY HAD BEEN SILENCED AGAINST THEIR WILLS!!!

Maybe they actually got down there, but there rope wasn't tied off as well as it should have been. Someone should send out a rescue party for that Nikon 10MP.

For a while every time someone brought up the SSC I just kinda got annoyed... but you guys are just way too entertaining.

OK...I'm a bit behind the curve on the SSC; I've only maintained a passing interest in it, as it's newer than stuff I'm generally interested in. But when you guys are talking about the 'tunnels' there, are you referring to what would have developed into the collider ring? Or are there actually other tunnels onsite?

Yes, the main collider ring was to be 53 miles around, of which approximately 17 miles of the ring were bored before the project was terminated. There is also a smaller site South of the main site that was the ion source injector. There were three tunnels scheduled for that site, only the smaller two were constructed and they were both cut and cover, but the third was still in the planning stages and never constructed. The third tunnel or High Energy Booster would have been what connected that site to the main collider ring.

It's been one of our Holy Grail sites for a long time. A lot of people have explored the above ground facilities but no one has posted photos of any of the tunnels. The photo above with the alien is one of the original SSC construction photos and that entrance was covered up and was a grass covered hill for years. From a photo 2X took (I think) it looks like it's soon to become a sink hole.

*edit* I think the alien may have been added later and was not part of the original photo.

I'm not so sure about that. I've heard rumors that the tunnel actually connected to an old runnel that runs all the way to Roswell.

Personnel shaft is definitely turning into a sink hole.

I wonder if they filled it all the way down, or if they capped it off at some point and back filled with dirt?

I'm not sure, I have never found any information on the backfilling of these shafts. All three of the shafts at the site have settled some, but this one is much deeper than the others.

There are holes near the bottom of it where water has been draining through.

hmm. taking a rough and uneducated guess.... i suppose if you knew the dimensions of the original shaft and calculated a volume -- then measured the dimensions of the sinkhole and calculated the volume of displaced dirt, you could determine what percentage of the shaft has been filled with dirt.

I'm thinking it was capped. If I remember correctly, they were hoping to one day get re-funded and continue the project.
