Attn CT explorers - Gillette's Castle Question

For those of you who are familiar with Gillette's Castle in East Haddam, CT, I pose a question. Has anyone veered off the guided tour and explored rooms that are considered "off limits"? There are at least two such rooms that I am aware of. Both are on the third floor and accessible only (allegedly) by a pull down ladder. Supposedly there are a couple sitting rooms and what not. According to a quick google, from there the roof can be attained. Google search results reinforce this info and there are a number of rumors of secret passageways, etc. I have no idea how true that information is, however.

For those not familiar with the location, an eclectic gentleman by the name William Gillette built a mansion to look like a medieval castle in the early 1900's. He was an actor and director with intriguing taste. After his passing, the State of Connecticut purchased the property, maintains it, and runs tours. It's quite the site, with interesting architecture and period furniture.

I don't anticipate there being anything earth-shattering in any of the forbidden rooms, but it would still be fun to get in.

I have been there several times. Once I ducked under a velvet rope and walked into a off limits room. some paintings, a carpet and some old furniture, nowhere near as lavish as the display pieces on the tour. There was a hallway beyond that had 2 other doors and an exit at the end. There were some cases of paper and documents at the end of the hall if I remember. Not very exciting.

I was told once that there is an underground passage through the basement that leads down to the river. I'd love to check that out.

If you have done things right people won't be sure if you have done anything at all.

If that's true about the passage to the river that's pretty bad-ass. Unfortunately there's little aside from speculation to go on. It may be worth another trip to find out though.

That's cool that you were able to do some searching there. I assumed there would not be anything crazy in those rooms. I guess it's not as interesting as Lord Bafford's Manor in the game "Thief" if you are familiar with it.
