Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone would want to get together and explore @ Mac? I'm a first year and dont know any of the buildings. and it would be great to get to know the area from someone who has already been here.

I've never really found anything incredibly awesome. There are steam tunnels but I can't figure out how to get into them and I haven't heard of anyone that's explored them. Aside from that most of the buildings are pretty new and don't offer much in the way of interesting "out of bounds" areas.

I do hope someone can show me otherwise however.

Take a walk in the basement of the John Hodgins Engineering Building (JHE). It's a public part of the steam tunnel system. Kind of neat.

What are you taking?

Have you tried those at York University?

I was enrolled in Engineering at McMaster during 2007/2008. Was accepted into Civil Engineering for second year, but over the summer decided that I was more interested in the Design and Drafting components of Mechanical Engineering, which is what I'm now taking at Sheridan in Brampton.

But, I still live in Hamilton (about 15 minute walk away from Mac). The commute kind of sucks. For 0800 class today I was up at 0530 to catch the 0607 GO bus from McMaster. Only 10 minutes to spare for class... (Shit, Stewie, I'm becoming a dreaded bus foamer. SHIT SHIT!)

Anywho, I was in McKay residence for first year, but was never able to access the steam tunnels (I didn't try to get in very hard). If you're in one of the residences near Commons, try the basement mechanical doors, see if they're open. Watch out for workers... they're usually inside when the doors are unlocked.

I have seen photos of the tunnels (sometimes adventurers post them on DC++). Good luck!

I bet Mac is full of interesting restricted access areas. I never really explored any of them, sadly, just the aforementioned public parts of JHE and pretty much every public area of any other building. I imagine you'd get taken down pretty quickly trying to explore the reactor or the tandem accelerator these days, after the scare with people trying to procure waste to make a dirty bomb back around '04.

Where Bridges is right now used to be nice to go to up until it opened; it was the Rathskeller back before I went there in '03, and there was a room behind the stair area that was covered with signatures and messages from people who had been in there over the years. The kitchen area was also pretty neat, though mostly empty.

I don't know if they've done anything with it, but there was also a restaurant-style area on the main floor of that building to the right-hand side when you walk in. It was a bit odd, seeing a full restaurant setup lie unused for four years.

The older buildings are also very nice to check out. Nothing restricted really, but still cool.

Although I can now go into it, I've never been into Alumni Hall. Anyone been in there?

I was also there in 2003 when it was still Rathskeller, that room was indeed very neat! We were never able to actually get far inside Alumni Hall. It seemed that whatever hour we went there was always someone wandering around the entrance. We even tried dressing up and sneaking in when a formal event was going on but that didn't work!

University Hall is one of my favorite buildings for the architecture, and unlike Hamilton Hall the interior had not yet been renovated (although I am not sure if it has since been re-done). There is one particular stairwell to the basement on which you can see the foot print indentations of people walking up and down them throughout the years. There was also a small door near the bathrooms if I remember correctly, but we were not able to get through it. JHE, ABB and BSB were always fascinating to me for their content, not so much their structural appearance. The only other thing I can remember about Mac is the tunnel that goes from the Psychology Complex to the basement of the hospital. It should still be openly accessible. Unfortunately I am no longer doing work with the Psychology Department, so I do not have my swipe card anymore to access the rest of the building, as not very much of it is open to students.

when you are here, you wish you were there. but once you're there, it soon becomes a here, and you again wish to be there instead of here...

we will never be completely satisfied.
